6mm br chamber

Hey all,
I have a 6mm br and am not sure what reamer was used for the chamber
I'm currently using remington brass but would really like to be able to use
Lapua just not sure it will chamber in my rifle. I wonder would someone
Be willing to send me a FL sized piece of lapua brass to see if it will chamber?
Scott

Scott,
I will have to see if I still have any 6br brass, I am sure I do, I bought 2K pieces but haven't received them yet and I don't run a 6br anymore I have a 6BRX and 6BRDX so I use 6br brass to ff to the improved chamber. I will look in the morning and if so I would be happy to send you a piece. I also would like to welcome you to the forum, it is a great place to hang out and learn, there are a couple guy's that can be,...well they can be but almost all of them are great people and extremely helpful and knowlegable, I hope to hear more from you, If I don't p.m you by tomorrow you can p.m me and remind me, I am not walking down to the loading room tonight. You have a f/l die don't you? I think I still do but may have gave it away.
Wayne.

If Wayne doesn't have any, I can send you an unfired case. I have an older 6br that I chambered with Remington style reamer and the Lapua brass doesn't even come close to fitting. If you don't see a decent bulge at the base of your Remington brass, I'm betting that the Lapua won't fit. Norma brass does fit this chamber, but you have to trim the case. I can send one of those as well.

Is this a custom barrel or a factory? If custom I would definitely do a chamber cast. If factory, I'm pretty sure others will know what fits.

I would guess from you initial statement that you are using unturned Remington brass. If the length of the brass is between 1.550 and 1.560 then Lapua or Norma brass should fit with no problem. Prior to 1989 the original 6MM BR Remingtom was based on a length of 1.520. Non of the current production or semi custom (including the Remington Custom Shop) shops are using reamers that are for the 1.520 length. Size wise the current Remington 6MM BR brass is almost the same as Lapua/Norma brass. I have four 6MM BR, two of which came from the Rem. Custom shop and two done by Jim Hart. I can use any of the current brass. Thing to note is the older Lapua Brass (paper box, not blue plastic), will give a loaded round size of arount .269, the newer Lapua and the Remington brass is around .267. The Remington Brass also uses a small primer like the Lapua, but has a larger flash hole.

Yes the remington brass that I'm currently using is the 1.560 lenght and unturned also the chamber is a .271 neck. Thanks for all the replies

Jrm850,
It is a custom hart barrel. And I really appreciate You and Wayne
For being willing to help me out with a piece of brass. What is the
normal rate for having a chamber cast done?

I have no idea what your local gunsmith will charge but a brick of cerrosafe cost about $20 and should last a lifetime. I was really just concerned that you didn't know the neck diameter, but since you do I wouldn't worry about it.

The Lapua Brass is almost a full .002" fatter at the base than the fired Norma Brass and will not fit in my old bench gun chamber. In the attached photo the lapua brass is the one in front and you can see the scuff marks where I tried to press it into the chamber. The Norma brass behind it in the pic has been fired many times and still fits. Both have had the necks turned for clearance and trimmed to the same OAL. Remington Brass fits aslo but I don't have a piece to compare with. The Reamer is an Old JGS that just says "6mm BR Match".

Thanks for pics, the barrel is marked 6mm BR so I think I just need a piece of
lapua brass to see if it will chamber ok, the rifle has been shot 200 times and
I have all 200 of the once fired cases problem is most of them have been trimmed too short by the previous owner. 20 of them are still 1.560 and I could
Use the others but to get on the lands there's not enough of the bullet in the throat of the casing

Your setup is most likely what I was talking about. Prior to 1989 the 6mm BR was based on a 1.520 length and chamber dia. were slightly different than the standard that was established in 1989. If you look at a box of loaded Remington 6MM BR Ammo it states: "This 6MM BR Rem cartridge will not fit in 6MM Br chambers". What they are talking about is that 1989 change.

Jay Leno came to mind :)

My reamer is definitely old school 6br. The actual length of the chamber is 1.535". I bought a .271 neck and throat and was going to bump it out so I could use unturned Lapua and was caught off guard that the base diameter was a little different also. Oh well... I couldn't let 89$ worth of brass go to waste so I spent $475 on a Dasher reamer and new Bartlein. I know that makes perfect sense here, but my wife is still struggling with the logic. She will probably show up with a pair of earrings without the diamonds now. :)

run that dasher reamer in your old bbl and you will bring it bak to life and hav a fire form bbl to keep the round cound down on you new bbl !!!!! Roger

I have a more devious version of that plan in place. I'm sticking it on a 700 for my wife so she will unknowingly be forming my brass. I can see it now..." Honey why aren't my groups as good as yours?" Just keep practicing baby. :)

Ed,
This is a fairly recent build and the 1.560 length brass chambers just fine
so maybe the lapua brass will chamber ok in my rifle. hopefully I will get a piece
And try it before I buy a box
