6mm BR build help.

My father is set on building (or buying) a 6BR for varmints. He originally wanted to buy a Savage 12 Benchrest (18614), but cannot find one anywhere. I've tried convincing him to gut his old 80's Rem 700 .243 but he would rather buy a new action. If you had $2000 to spend on a build (excluding optic), what components would you buy? I'm new to bolt action builds but trying to learn so I can help him.

Since he already has a Remington I would look at a Remage. He can change the parts out or upgrade either or both. You can get a Remage barrel from Urbanrifleman on here or Northland Shooter Supply. There are other barrel makers that offer profits. He can buy a new or used stock. Larry D Scott on here sells Jewell triggers. Keep looking at Bud’s Gun Shop and he can find a new action or look somewhere else for new or used. You can buy the action wrench and barrel nut wrench from Northland Shooter Supply . Barrel nut and Recoil lug can be bought from them also, don’t know what Urbanrifleman stocks but look at his website. If you have a vise you will not need a barrel vise. You will need a go/no go gauge to set headspace or take the parts to a gunsmith and let him assemble it. It is not hard and is very satisfying when the rifle shoots real small groups. Make sure to get QUALITY parts and everything will do very well.

If he’s set on doing a new build completely, and 2000 it would be tight. But Mac bros evo ss would be your cheapest bet. Kelbly atlas tac is another fantastic. You could save a bit and go tikka.

$1000 for the Rem 700 action blueprint and barreling. stocking from $350 B&C to $1200 for some of the Chassis systems. Ya $2000 is very do-able. I'd stick the most money in the action, barreling and get a B&C or H&S stock and bed them. Just my 2 bits. The Tacti-Cool just isn't my thing YMMV.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately he doesn't want to give up his Remington action so I'm going to need one. That Mack Bros Evo looks nice, they are showing out of stock but hopefully they will be doing a run soon. I take it thats a 700 footprint and it would accept a remage barrel? sorry, I'm a noob.

Id say your best bet is to get a rem 700 SA 308 bolt face from the classifieds section here for $400-$450.. then get a remage barrel, and a hs precision or stockys stock, and a jewell trigger.

Put a single shot floor plate in the action.

It’s been while since I’ve seen a Remington action in the $400-$450 range. I put up a WTB post a while back and had several PMs from people wanting over $600. Maybe this is getting better since Remington is back in business?

If I were in the market for a budget action today, I would definitely consider one from Mack Brothers.

I would have a good Smith chamber a Bartlien or Krieger barrel on a Defiance Tenacity action and put it in a Grayboe Renegade stock. It still might be a little over your budget without bedding, and you could you could do that latter at some point too. The problem with the 6BR is going to be feeding it as a repeater, so you will have to do your research or build it as a single shot.

I put one together with a Bighorn Origin action, KRG Bravo Chassis, CBI barrels. Trigger Tech trigger. I'm happy with everything about it and have killed quite a few pdogs with it. If I did it again I'd have no problem buying an Urbanrifleman Wilson barrel. His barrels shoot great.

Dang thats a good affordable price for a custom. Never seen those!

i would like to point out that this is a very wide open forum.
you will get answers from people that plink, hunters and large target steel shooters.
also from precision target and small target shooters.
the problem is, there is not code attached to those posts
savage single shot rifles have done well
some upgraded 700 actions have done well
bat is just about the top of benchrest shooting
somewhere in between is the makings of a varmint rifle.
how good of a rifle is about the action, trigger and bbl( and chamber)
i'll stick with my original recomendations

Not bad for a Remington style footprint action.

Bighorn Origin.
Prefit barrel from Criterion.
Choose a trigger.
B&C stock or a KRG Bravo.

The KRG will feed the BR from an MDT magazine.

Another option is the Kauger Arms actions.
I just put one together with a Proof 7.5T @22".
Fitted and chambered by Archer Custom Rifles.
He did a prefit and the markings actually line up properly.
Used a Triggertech Diamond
and an MDT XRS stock.
It feeds and ejects like butter.
