6mm BR barrel length

I want to build a varmint rifle in 6mm BR but I am thinking about a 20 inch barrel. Does anyone have any experience or comments about using a short barrel in the 6mm BR? I wonder how much velocity I may lose. I am guessing no more than 100fps.

I shoot a XP-100 Bench Pistol I made for ground hogs using a 20 inch Hart barrel with a 1 in 14 twist, using 32.5 grains of Varget, and a 66 grain Fowler Flat Base bullet it shoots at 3100 fps very, very accurate.

I'm shooting a Krieger 24", with Varget I'm getting 3450 pushing a 70gr VMAX.

With a 20" barrel, you may as well just shoot .223 with 55-63gr bullets...

I'm sure the 20 would be good for 100-200yd target shooting but for varmints, you need more barrel

Hornady currently lists a 58gr, 65gr, 75gr, and 87gr V-Max in 6mm. They do list a 70gr spire point however. I assume the poster was referring to the 75-grainer.

There's no reason why a 20" 6mm BR is a bad idea, and it has definate advantages over .223, in brass and consistency, as well as velocity. I'd base the rifle,twist rate) around the 87gr VMAX if I was you, it has a very good BC. I'd expect 2750fps with reasonable loads, which is very good and plenty for varmints past 600 yards.
