6mm br barrel for pistol

I am looking to build an xp-100 style pistol and wanted to get some opinions on what barrel lengh and twist rate to get. I know longer is better but don't want so long that it is barrel heavy and unbalanced. I plan on a mid-grip design so that should help. Looking to shoot 90 to 105 grain bullets. The distance I plan on shooting is 50 yds to however far I could cleanly kill coyote out on the farm. Thanks for your help.

A 20 inch barrel should balance out pretty well with a center grip, depending on the barrel diameter.
Even down to 16" will be good enough..
A 8 twist will shoot the bullets you mentioned really well.
Personally I would rather use a rear grip and a better trigger for a new build, but thats just me...

You may want to contact clay spencer he has built a bunch. He knows what to do. My uncle's having one built 6br 18"then brake by clay. He has a group in his shop of a 100yd target that's like 4 3/4" with an xp. I would give him a call

I would stay at 15 inches length and then possibly a muzzle break. It is nice to see what you have shot at!

The 1 in 8 twist will work well with your bullet weights. The center/rear grip question mostly comes in to play with a long shooting session in competition like handgun silhouette. For the occasional shot at a varmint I also would lean toward the rear grip with a better trigger.

Beware on the length.....I havnt thought about this in a while but think somewhere around 16" is max legal length .....and whether you will be shooting laying on the ground or from a bench has a lot to do with the type of or practicality of a brake.....in the hay fields and grass here in the east it is not too bad with a brake...but in the dirt/sand/dry parched earth of the west it can really kik up some dust.....just doin a lil thinkin out loud....hope this helps with your choices....Roger
PS,,,definately go with 8" twist....you can shoot any bullet from 60 to 108 gr....

You positively do not need a brake on a 6BR or even a 7BR for that matter. I owned three center grips when I shot steel. They were all 15" and well balanced. My 6PPC shot under .5 with a Shilen contour that was close to the Remington. We had to maintain weight which you won't have to worry about. Later! Frank

this one is a kreiger 8 twist 6BRX. 15.825" long 15/16" at muzzle. its on a savage striker action. NY says 16 max for hunting. that is a 4x Burris on it there. that has been removed and a 6-18 Nikon installed. no brake. just back off from full field of view and its fine to shoot. 95 VLD hunting bullets at 2775. connected with this doe at 496 opening day of NY season

50 yards it will put them in the same hole. its impressive!!

Like everyones said, about 15" is good. I have a Witchita center grip shillouette pistol I used in IHMSA metallic shil. chambered for 7IHMSA(300 savage necked to 7mm) and it shot extremely well. Barrel was not a bull, either, but rather conventional taper. Great balance. No need for a brake. Accuracy excellent out to the 200 meter 50lb steel rams and took them down with authority. Used heavier bullets tho, 140 and 162gr.
