6mm berger bullets question

About 2 years ago I bought 500 of the Berger 6mm 105gr hybrid target.

I loaded some up for my 6mm Creedmoor. After trying 200 reloads with different powder weigh and lead I just could not get any type of accuracy at 600 and 1000 yds. Using H4350, 40.6gr and pushing it around 2900 - 2950 FPS.

Went back to using Hornady 105 BTHP Match and went back to my usual 2-3" at 600 and 6-7" at 1000 yds.

Now I shot that barrel out and put a Krieger barrel any started shooting my Hornady's at 3050 FPS and getting 7 or 6" groups at 1000 yds.

Today I thought hey a different barrel might try loading some Bergers to see if this barrel likes them.

Well, my 5 Hornadys gave me a 6.7" group at 1000 but the Bergers were getting 10-12" groups.

Now one thing I noticed was the bergers were going 75 FPS faster at the target than the Hornadys. Makes sense since the BC is higher on the bergers (BC .536) than the Hornadys (BC .530).

After shooting we were talking about this and one shooter suggested trying a slower or faster FPS.

OK, good idea but don't want to reinvent the wheel because the barrel node testing I did told me the barrel likes 3050 FPS.

My question to anyone using the Berger 105gr Hybrid Target bullets have you found a FPS that they performed better than another?

Thanks in advance...

The Berger hybrids as well as VLD bullets are picky about seating depth in my experience. I was getting about 2" at 500yds with the hydrids and I like them, but I had to do a lot of seating depth testing. Unfortunately, I don't have anymore and haven't been able to find any in stock or I'd continue to shoot them.

If my memory serves, I had to seat them further off the lands than I do with a bullet like the Hornady 105 BTHP. Same thing with the Hornady A-Tip, I ended up being about 0.050 off the lands with those, when I'm typically 0.010

Thanks, I seated these at .30 off the lands (which is were I seat the Hornadys).

Would BC make a difference at (or near) the muzzle, where most chrono's measure? Unless you're grabbing downrange velocity (ShotMarker or similar) I can't see the BC making a difference. I know the bullet design will (bearing length, mostly, I'd suspect), but BC is irrelevant until the atmospheric drag comes into play, no?

Yes, FPS is down at the 1000 yd target.

Not sure what your barrel twist is, but I've had a couple 8twist barrels that didn't particularly like the 105 Hybrids. The 7.83-7.5twists seemed to preform better. YMMV.

Every bullet is different. Play with the seating depth and see if it makes a difference. From .030 off, I would begin moving toward the lands, but with your velocities, I would be doing it slowly and looking for pressure issues. I have found 105 Hybrids to work for me anywhere from .006 in to well off the lands. I typically work from .015 off now in MY chamber and powder selections.

I don't shoot them....but, i a conversation with a national team shooter, I gather that the best method is to keep moving them BACKWARDS until you fined the sweet spot. He is using very long jumps - over 70 thou in a 6 Creedmoor. When I run out of 107's....

I jump my 105 vlds 5 off at 2922 with my 6br and it shoots in the low 1's and excellent vertical at 600yd. Its going to come down to what the barrel likes or dislikes. Mine, its a Broughton 5c 1-8.

I didn't find either one too sensitive. You are correct that the Hybrid has a broader range of seating depth. They both shot very well for me in 30", 8" twist barrels. Both seem to work well around 2950-2965.
I haven't had a problem with the VLD's either but the hybrids are much more forgiving on seating depth, but lots of people say they are a little temperamental compared to the Hybrids but usually with a little fooling around any decent rifle can usually shoot both those bullets well.
