6MM ARC 14 months later

Late post on this old thread but thought I should chime in. Been shooting with a Defiance Machine built bolt gun in 6mm ARC for about the same time as this thread - nothing fancy. All of it with 108gr ELD Match factory ammo...

It's up to around 1200 rounds now and it still shoots very well - A few pics below:

The rifle - Factory ammo - Cortina V2 tuner:

Best groups at ~100 yards still doing those today...

What stock is that ?

Listening to the thread on the development of the 6ARC and was blown away with the idea that it was lethal on deer at 500 yds. I'm looking to hunt prong horn and mule deer in Idaho and was planning on taking 2 rifles, a 6ARC and a 270 Winchester now I'm thinking about just taking the 6ARC. What is the consensus on my thoughts?

I think the idea of 6 ARC is fantastic. But yes, 270 huge advantage for ethical 500 yd hunt.
You're absolutely right. I sure would like to see how the ARC works on prong horn. Before I lost it in a house fire I always used a 243 and will replace it if the hype on the ARC turns out to be BS. I'm having a 270 built with a hart 1/9 twist on a Mauser F/N action. Should be done by time to go.

Shot placement is key to the 6ARC discussion, and I would want a muzzle velocity greater than 2700 FPS. That would give you 1050 ft-lbf of muzzle energy at 500 yards with a 105 grain bullet.

.270 Win with 130g Berger HVLD started at 3100 fps gets to 650 yards before retained velocity goes below 1800 fps with standard conditions.
6ARC with 105g Berger HVLD started at 2800 fps gets to 600 yards before the same.

At those max yardages, .270 Win only has 150 ft-lbs more energy (954 Vs 798).

If 50 yards matters, take both guns.

To me, not enough difference between the two to recommend one over the other.

I was really debating an arc. Then I was back to looking at a 6.8spc. I’ve had 2 in the past. And I’ve always enjoyed them. But I wanted something new. And something that I wouldn’t get angry for losing brass out hunting or just shooting. I went 6x45. I can’t wait to get the barrel. I was also looking at the 6x6.8. But I’d need to buy a lot of parts. As is im
Just swapping barrels. I may even just build a new upper later to keep and get another optic. Now I’m just debating on 1-4x or 1-8x. I really need to get out with the Grendel some more also. I need to get some lighter bullets and play with them

To add to this post, I have now decided on a scope for my 16" Aero Precision M4E, my choice was not to place a precision scope on it as this is a general-purpose rifle.

The Sig Sauer 2nd focal plane Tango MSR 1 x 10 x 28, LPVO. The scope has just arrived, I'll need a 1/2" riser to clear the backup iron sight, the A2 front sight as well as have clearance for my brass catcher attachment, I placed the order for that today. Mu Luther stock has enough elevation to still get me a decent cheek weld.

This scope has an illuminated reticle that at 1 power or other low powers can simulate a red dot and has significant magnification for longer range work. No parallax adjustment but it's a low-cost scope. With iron sight I have been making hits on steel at 500 and 600 yards so I believe this may improve my hits at that range and possible longer.

Losing brass was a significant consideration about mounting my scope, the mounting clearance had to maintain rom for the catcher.

What would it take to get 2800 fps out of the ARC with a 105 Berger HVLD? Barrel length and powder choice?

I do know that for a gas gun 6 ARC 110 A TIPs. 26 in barrel 7.25 twist Hornady 11th edition max 29.7 grain Leverevolution will average out to 2758 fps. No signs of over pressure in new Starline brass.

It works for steel @ 1 mile. Lots of people told me it cant be done. Others before me have done it, I have now done it, I may bump it a tenth or two in grains. I want to try 2150 yards next.

Have a great weekend.!
