6mm ai twist rate

will a 1/10 twist work for the 105-107's.The box says 9 for the 105s and 7-8 for the 107s,but that is for the standard 6mm and not the AI.

Thanks Bobby

Bobby, the 10 twist will probably not work for 105-107 class bullets in your 6AI. I have 2 6AI's and both are 8 twist and handle the 105 class bullets very well. The 10 twist will be limited to around 90 grain bullets as heaviest you could stabilize. Of course you can always try to shoot them and see what happens. Is this a rifle you had rechambered from standard 6MM?

I dont think it will work either ....if this is a new build why chance it ...my bbls are all either 13.5/14 twist or 8 twist ....none inbetween.....get an 8 twis bbl and have fun...Roger

I have a 243AI, with a 9 twist Hart that stabilizes both the 105's and 107's, however the 10 twist may be on the edge of instability. If you could get a hold of a few of each bullet, load them up and try them, they may or may not shoot. I'm guessing the 95 VLD's would work fine and at 6MM AI velocities you wouldn't be losing a ton to the 105's.

I would be looking hard at the Hornady 87 grain V-max, drive em fast and straight. The 6AI has the boiler room.

My 6AI is a 1:9 28" Hart. Dave Tooley told me a 1:9 was all I needed for the 107 SMK. Sierra told me I had to have a 1:8. I let Dave pick the twist and he was dead on. I shoot a 700 ft and never had a problem any time of the year with the 105 AMax or 107 SMK. I really like the 95 VLDs in my gun.

Luck with your build, Tim

I have two 6AIs...one 10 twist and one 12 twist.

The 12 twist shoots 75-80 grain bullets real well but wont shoot 88gr bergers. the 10 twist had no chance with the 95 vld and in fact shoots the 90 gr berger well out to 500 then it falls apart also. No question the next barrel i order will be 8 twist but for now 75vmax in the 12 and 87 vmax in the 10!

Hope it helps.

The velocity of the AI vs. the standard will not be enough to affect the twist rate. It's really best to go with the manufacturer's recommendations unless you are dealing with a large velocity difference. Just for example if you were to neck down a 7mm rem mag to shoot 6mm then you would probably need to look at going with a different twist rate. Brian Brown.

the stability is not a function of weight only but more a function of oal length of the bullet. you can shoot a short 55 in a 14 fine and then try a 55 longer design and no stability, the same is true with wll bullets, the oal of the bullet is the key,

I have a 7 twist 6xc that I am thinking of chambering to 243 and making a repeater out of it. Badger bottom metal or HS maybe. I had the action barreled a few years ago and have never shot it yet. The 700 floor is welded solid too, looking to open it back up. Is this a bad idea?
