6mm AI 87 vmax loads

I just put a 10 twist barrel on one of my guns and chambered it in 6mm ai. It is 25.5'' long and it shoots good with 52 grains of R-19 but is fairly slow at 3300 fps.

I have these powders on hand;
IMR4064, IMR 4350
Varget
H-4350
H4831sc
Reloader 19

Anybody have any loads or suggestions on which powder I should try to gain some velocity?

Thanks,
Dallas

I like Imr 4350 in my 6mm AI for the heavier bullets I have a load for an 85 grbthp and one for 95 gr sst. I can't remember off the top of my head the charges but I was getting 3400 fps and 3300 respectively with my loads. I have used w 760 but I was running into pressure and switched to 4350. You also might want to look into the new Superformance for the 6mm AI it is what I am using for my lighter loads and love it so far. my 2 cents

I shoot the same combo with N160. 49.5gr for bare bullets and 51.0 with Moly or BN. It is a Savage Target action and the primers do bulge a bit, but brass holds up well. I hope to get the firing pin bushed someday. Check the 6AI articles on this site for some great info.

Dallas, with your 25.5 inch barrel, I would go with H4350. H4831SC is too slow and suited for heavy bullets. Don't know as to a charge weight. Maybe start around ~47.5 and go up in .3 increments while checking speed and looking for a node it likes.

My 29" Shilen 6AI 12tw shoots lights out with both 80 & 88 grain FB Bergers pushed by RL 22. You could easily run your RL 19 but I much prefer the slower powder for high volume p-dog shooting. The lower chamber pressure equates to less barrel heating and throat erosion. And the p-dogs are just as dead at 3350 fps as they are at 3500 plus.

Im my 6MM AI I like to use the slow powders, RL-22, H1000. IMR 7828. These work well with bullets from 87gr to the 107's.

Frank, I've used H414 with 70gr NBT's in a couple of different 243 Win's with excellet results don't know why it shouldn't also work in a 6AI.
