6mm Ackley vs 6×47?

I have the action and was wanting to build a 6 ackley with a 8 twist and my cousin was telling me that I should be thinking of the 6×47 with the 8 twist instead. .does anyone have some experience with this?......thanks

The 6mm case is so long you will have issues with shooting the heavy end long VLD type bullets using a short action. In my 22/6mm Improved I can only load to the 2.810ish OAL. Wanted to shoot the 75Amax but that bullet design cannot be loaded that short. The reamer I bought from another gent who couldn't remember how he had it ground. It is 2.935ish to the lands when with new chamber. Too long for a short action and even using a Wyatt box it won't get there. So only real cure is a long action then you don't have worries as any bullet will have room. I end up using either the 70 Berger VLD or the 75BTHP Hornady will work.

You will have the same or worse issues with long 6mm bullets!

I have owned both the 6MM AI and the 6x47L. Both are capable of stunning accuracy with the nod maybe going to the 6X47L accuracy wise. My 6X47L I had some difficulty establishing the load for it out of the gate but once i found it the rifle shot tiny groups at 600 yards using 108 grain Bergers. The 6MM AI will net you anywhere from 100 to 200 fps faster using 105 class bullets. But the 6 AI will burn 8-10 grains more powder and barrel life will be shorter. I cooked a 6AI with a Krieger barrel in under 900 rounds using the rifle in midrange GH matches. Firecracking was bad and rifle just quit shooting overnight. Personally I had more fun with the 6AI as it is just a cool looking round and really does not give up that much to a 6-284. Mine was also based on a 700 short action and I just single fed the rifle. I would build another 6AI over the 6X47L. Love the 6AI!

The 6mmAI holds about 2-5 grains more powder than a .243Win.

The .243Win holds about 2-5 grains more powder than a 6/47.

You are looking a 250-500 fps difference between the 6mmAI and the 6/47 with the same bullets.

You are looking at 400-800 rounds more barrel life in the 6/47.

In my opinion the 6/47 is more inherently accurate.

I've never owned a 6x47L but have shot against them for several years. And I've shot a few rounds through a fellow competitor's rifle. They can be competitive and accurate. Very nice round IMHO. I currently shoot a few 6xc's and view them as similar to the 6x47L.

I had a 6AI and it didn't take long to burn the barrel out shooting midrange groundhog/varmint matches. I've also competed with the 6-284 and personally I like it better than the 6AI. It too went through barrels in well under 900 rounds.

Then I had a 6xc (similar to the 6x47L) built and THAT is the way to go. Much better barrel life, less powder, less noise and recoil. Bottom line.... go with the 6x47L and don't look back. ;) WD

6×47L IT IS!! Ordering parts now! ..now I have A LOT of 6mm brass to count out and sell to buy 6.5x47 L brass!!
