6mm/284

Anyone shooting a 6/284? I bought this from my buddy a couple months ago. I'm just starting to get serious about working up some loads. My buddy told me the gun was built and set in a gun cabinet fo 20 years. The old boy that built it, was getting too old to mess with it any more,so, he put up for sale. My buddy bought it a year ago and messed with it for a while. He decided to sell it and ask me if I may be interested. I like a challenge, So I bought it. This caliber requires a lot of attention. I was a little overwhelmed to start with, it's getting better.
The twist on this beast is 14, with a very heavy 24 inch barrel. I'm shooting a 65 gr vmax and I'm gonna try some 75 gr. Tuesday, we were tearing up a 3 1/2 steel plate at 300 yes. That was. Fun.

I had one similar. 24in, 14 twist, it shot really well using 66gr benchrest bullets propelled by H4831sc. Velocity was around 3600 f.p.s.

I'm using 44 gr of varget. That's a pretty light load, around 3550 fps. I heard they're barrel burners, with those hot loads.

I have a barrel waiting to go onto my Rem 700, currently in 308. I intend to use the 85-87gn pills and will see what speed I can get using Reloader 17.

Okay, I'm officially confused. I put together a 12 twist Dasher last summer and was pushing the 65 grain V-Max at 3600 feet per second. Had some people run quick load and they were telling me I was at 51000 PSI. 51000 PSI is a powder puff load in a Dasher. How can you be getting less velocity out of a 6 - 284?

Once again, just causing trouble.
Tod

Not 14 twist but 12. I get 3805 with 70 Nosler BT's out of a 24" Kreiger with IMR 4831. Great coyote load if you aren't saving hides.

i have two 6.5/.284 s both shoot very well but this caliber is very hard on barrel throats when loaded to max i get great velocity as per my oehler chrono but i am loading very hot

I had a 6mmAI that I loved, but it was very tired, throat was gone and speed was'nt what it should be,so I had a 30"8 twist Lilja laying around,I got the bright idea that I should have a 6-284.Greg Tannel chambered it for me but warned me that the 8 twist might be too fast for such a big case, well with the advent of the Sierra 110's I think it might be time to try a heavy 6mm bullet, all I need is a good scope.Have always thought I should have opted for another 6 Dasher and played it safe with that 8 twist barrel.Might as well have fun while it lasts, this thread has inspired me to shoot my new big 6-284.

Give it a try, I have a 30" 1-8 6x284, with RL33 I can get the 108 ELDs to 3600 but it's a touch sticky on the bolt lift, my reg load has them a touch above 3500, it's a groundhog gun for larger fields and works pretty well on them, barrel life suffered the most in load development but now that it's done I expect the thing to go a couple seasons, it doesn't always get brought out and when it does it might see 20 shouts on a big day.

Interested in your success with the 6/284. I am looking to throw 105 at 3300 with a 29 inch one in 8 barrel. I wonder about what bullets are good above that spin rate without self destructing or poor results. i expect to use 53.5 of RE 22 or equivalent to get to 3300. I have already gotten the 105 VLDs to 3300 with excellent accuracy.Do you know if the Berger Hybrids will take that spin rate or higher.

I've had the Berger Hybrids at almost 3600 and they held together fine out of my 8tw 6-284. My load now is around 3450 with Ramshot Magnum with very good accuracy.

Mauser 98 custom, nice looking rifle and the wood grain is spectacular. I just recently had a fella I work with ask if I would like some old guns that had been given him and he wanted to clean out his basement. I said yes figuring I could always use some spare gun parts as a hobbyist gun mechanic. Well he halls out an SMLE Mklll #1 that had been sporterized and in good condition , a 1938 98 Mauser rifle complete with a scope mount chambered in ............... yup 6mm/284, hence my interest in this thread. I asked what he wanted for the whole shebang and he said.............. just take it, I'll never do anything with it. He also included two brand new walnut Mauser stocks, still in the box and several spare 98 barrels in 8 mm. Then he throws in a 1917 Enfield action compete, drilled and tapped for a scope mount. Was a bit over whelmed to say the least but immensely grateful for his generosity.
I have a Hawkeye bore scope so was able to get a good look at the 6mm/284 throat and it reveals a practically new Apex barrel interior. Checked the pitch and it came out to 1 turn in 9.5 inches and is 26 inches long with a counter bore crown. The stock is plain walnut and is not glass or pillar bedded, this I will soon correct. I will also need to shorten the pull and remove the rather large cheek piece to better fit me.
I mounted a 3x9 Leopold scope I had extra so after a bit of stock modification, will be in business.
Ordered Hornady new dimension dies and 50, 6.5x284 cases to size down.
Bought a box of Hornady 87 grain V-max and wonder if I have pitch enough to stabilize them. I'm the new guy here, any advice will be thankfully received.

With a 1-9.5" twist rate, it should shoot those Hornady 87 gr. V-Max bullets very well!

IMR-4350 or 4831 powder should get you started very nicely. Federal Match primers work very well too.

Congratulations on such a wonderful score! That rifle and 1917 action are great, so I hope you get to really enjoy them.
