6mm- 284 Wildcat

I'm wondering if it's maybe some wildcat based off of a cut down 284 case or something maybe??

The drawing is named 6mm-MX....It's deffinately not a full size 6mm-284 at 1.732 case length. It would take some effort to form that from a 6.5 x 284 case. There would be some serious neck work to be done.

Actually any .284 case, but with baby steps and followed with a
series of internal mandrels and lots of lube, it's not to bad. It's
more then a 10 beer job, I'll tell ya'. I just leave them 7mm and
go play.....

Just about every gun in my safe would go before my 6-284 got sent down the road. I couldn't imagine ever not having at least one 6-284 looking back at me when the door swings open.

Looks like a simple matter of maximizing powder capacity on a standard bolt face in a 2.8" action. 6-284 is good, but really should have 3.1" or so.

If you were trying to squeeze ever last ounce out velocity from a 6-284 with the longest heaviest 243/6mm bullets like say a 110gr A-Tip you maybe would use a 3.1 Baney box but it's not like the 6-284 is lacking in case capacity and even at 2.8 OAL with the heavies it'll have a sizeable advantage over the 243Win or 6CM.

In a 6.5-284 or straight 284 with their much longer bullets a 3.1 mag box in a SA or a LA build would be the way to go.

Fewer clicks on elevation and windage turrets, shorter bbl life than even the 6mm Creed

It's modeled after the 6GT dimensions. I don't know if it's been done or if it's worth it. 6GT, 6WSSM, now 6MX. This could start an entire new family of 6mm's though.

If you go just a bit shorter, you can use 450 BushMaster brass and save a lot of brass work. 450BM was based off the 284 Win case.
It will probably grow longer than the illustration after necking down. Thanks for pointing out the 450 Bushmaster as I hadn't gotten that serious. Now it appears this is a viable Cartridge indeed. What a great site and community of enthusiasts!

Just guessing here but is this going to be end up being something about half between a 6mm Creedmoor and 6mm Dasher? Maybe somewhere in the 6x47 Lapua range

My Guestimate based on 6.5-rpm & 6.5-284 Norma is 50-51 grains capacity. So roughly 2+ Grains more than the lapua case, guesstimating. Dimensionally it should easily fit 115's or new 135 quarter bores easily.

I believe Bill Shehane did a short version of the 6-284. Give him a call scopeusout.com

So after a few measuring and calculator sessions the 25MX (25-450 Bushmaster) Seems like a viable Cartridge. After measuring my BlackJacks and allowing 1.3" of room above the base of the neck. Where the XC and the Lapua are both too long for the BlackJacks in order to stay well under 2.8" OAL, if that's your goal. Taking brass from .45 down to .25 or even .244 could prove disastrous and might be better left to a Manufacturer. Now on the hunt for some 450 Bushmaster Brass. Opting for the 6mm Version allows the possibility for a shorter OAL Cartridge if that benefits your application. With slightly more boiler room than the 6mm Creedmoor the 6mm MX could possibly afford far greater accuracy due to it's short Cartridge dimensions. Hypothetically speaking it might offer greater efficiency much like the 300 WSM. If it's too long for your needs then probably 6-30 Remington AR might better fit the bill not that it's available anywhere.
