6mm / 243 105 GR A-Max - What Cal?

jrkotz,
Just a side comment about not liking to shoot fireforming loads. Both my shooting partner and I shoot a wildcatted 6.5x55 Swede. Last year at the Nationals he holds up a bullet for me to examine as we were partnered that day. I was absorbed in the fact that he was "clean after 12 rounds and didn't se anything wrong with the bullet he handed me. At the end of the string he ask me if I noticed anything odd about said bullet and I said no. Then it dawned on me, he was shooting FF loads during the Nationals at 800 yards. BTW, he cleaned that yard line! If you think about it, you are basically shooting FF brass every time you pull the trigger. It's only a matter of how much forming is done relative to your reloading regimen.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Lloyd, i agree with you on that. Unless you have a really odd case or shoulder configuration, which would in effect " use up " some of the energy created by ignition and pressure buildup, I rarely see much difference in velocity and group size.
Have not seen you at MR&P for awhile, guess that new 1000 yard local range has you tied up !
Merry Christmas ! jim

Lots of good answers from lots of guys that really know their stuff. However, I think the 6mmXC fits more of your requirements. NO brass prep except for the ordinary prep. Very accurate. It will drive the 105 AMax with a reasonable amount of powder.

I have two 6mmXCs. One is on a Savage PTA and the other is on a Savage 12BVSS. Both are 28" Criterion 8 twist barrels. AND they shot 427 groundhogs this past summer with three of them over 1000 yards.

One more thing concerning the 105 AMax. Hornady says over 300,000 RPM can cause the bullet to blow up. So if you COULD get the 105 to 4000 fps, you would have to slow down the twist quite a bit. My 6-284 8 twist 26" barrel can drive the 105 AMax over 300,000 RPM (that's 3333 MV with an 8 twist), so I switched to 105 Berger Hybrids since I only intend to shoot long range target with that hotrod.

In my 6/284 Re 33 is producing more then a 100 FPS more then a 6mm AI But when my bbl is toast I'm done with that caliber. I might just go with a straight 243 or 6mm , No prairie dogs where I live .

Being the owner of multiple 6mm Rem and 6mm Rem AIs, I would tell you to get a 6BR. The efficiency of the BR case is amazing. Since I got my first 6BR four years ago, I shot my 6BR or cousins 1:10 over my 6mm Rem or AI and I have over 2000 6mm Rem brass stored up.

You can drive a 107 SMK to 2900-2950 fps with 25% less powder than in a 6mm Rem. When I built my 6mm Ackley - it was for a speed quest using the 107 SMK. I can drive the heck out of them at hit 3400 fps. Brass doesn't live long. Problem is they (107s) don't like to be shot at that high speed (based on my experience personally). I have some good loads at 3200-3250 fps that perform well.

I am a great fan of the 95 Berger VLD in all my 6mms. I can break 3000 fps easy in my 6BR and is ballistically is close to the 107 SMK.

Keep life simple and build a 6BR. Load and shot. Cheap dies. Superior Lapua brass.

When you get boarded with that rechamber one of the improved 6BR.

Luck in your choice,

Tim

I detect wisdom! ;)

Not A 105Amax,,,,,,But My Rem 700,243AI ,with a 26" Kreiger 12Twist , shoots the 55gr Nosler Purple Tips, alittle over 4000+ fps with Lapua Brass and Varget.

I been shooting PD's with a 6X47 creation of my own , that I call the 6X47 Gonzo . It's a 6x47 Lapua with a 40 degree shoulder and reduced body taper . This little gem pushes the 105's at up 3500+fps . Smooth one shot fireform , but it's a real barrel burner . It does everything my old 6MM Improved and 6/284 did with a lot less powder , all the way out past 1000 yards ! If you're just looking for an intermediate for say 600-800 yards , then I'd go 6BR . You'll get twice the barrel life , and if you have the right load and optics , you'll be able to do it at a "grand" easy ! I also shoot and favor a 6BR Norma and shoot , 95g and 105g bullets all the way out to a grand .

6Dasher/6BRX/6BR in that order.......

If you run the ballistic charts for these 3 at REASONABLE velocities you will see that they are very close to the bigger capacity cartridges that burn a lot more powder....
