6mm 105 hybrid 109 or 115 DTac in a 6XC Thoughts?

Building up a no turn 6XC in a 7.5 twist 26" I am looking at the Berger hybrid 105's 109's and the 115 DTacs. Peterson brass and H4350. Looking at what others have had good luck with in comparison to the other bullets vs cost and performance. Going to be a 600 to 1k fun low recoil paper puncher or varmint rig might even shoot a f class match if I can ever find some time again. I dont have the brass in my hand so if someone has neck thickness numbers from a recent lot it will be helpful. I still have to buy dies looking at whidden bushing. Its a new caliber for me to load so any helpful insghts will be helpful. Thanks, Matt

Never found a bullet that wouldnt do well in my t2k. Currently using Bergers. 68 at 200, 90 at 300, 105 or 108 at 600, and 115 at 1000. H4350 36.0 at 2 and 3. 38.0 at 6 and 1000. Some go higher, but I never found the need. I am using SigSauer 22-250 brass.

The 105 Hybrids have been the most consistent bullet in the handful of 6XCs that I have built. I have tried the 109s in the last couple that I have done and I have had a hard time finding the sweet spot with them. The 105s have always shot fantastic and work well on game despite their target designation.

What kind of velocity and barrel length have you been running?

Does the 22-250 brass hold up well?

This past summer I shot a lot of Peterson 6XC loaded ammo. They load it with Sierra 107gr Match Kings.
I thought this will be okay for breaking the barrel in and practice, but was just happy to get the brass from it. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance. ES in teens and single digit SD's were the norm. With all the Covid restrictions I didn't make it to too many matches, but my practice log shows quiet a few cleans....this ammo did not hold me back at all. I'll be getting more for the 2021 season.

Give it a try, you may end up feeling like I did, that the few clicks of wind you give up using a 107 instead of a 115 DTAC may not be worth the extra effort to reload.

Good Luck,
Ross

Berger 105 vld

I built quite a few of these when the 6mm stampede started in PRS competitions. 6XC was a big hit for a while until the BR and Dasher derivatives played into the fold.

I used the same load for intermediate F-Class (600 yards) them switched rifles to shoot F-Class at 1,000 yards with the 115 DTAC RBT. That load was increased to another node for the heavier bullets.

The tuning was easy for me and the cartridge is quite comfortable to shoot for the extended runs. Never used any 4350, I prefer Re-16 by a long shot! ;)

I have only tried the 105 Hybrids but have never been disappointed. I only have access to 450 yrd range so I didn't invest in the 115 DTACs.
I would strongly suggest the resizing die from Tubb and the seater die from Redding that come as a "set" from his website. I also bought the Peterson brass at the same time, LRP.
Yes, I took a big 'ol swig of the Tubb Koolaid, but have no regrets about it whatsoever!

The 105 gr. Hybrids seem to shoot well no matter where I seat them relative to the lands. I settled on .015 off but it was really a bit of a coin flip. I've not tried the DTACs yet but I have given the 115 gr. Berger VLD, the 108 gr. Berger, the 109 gr. Hybrid, The 115 gr. Nosler RDF, the 107 gr. SMK and the 112 gr. Barnes a look.

I'm convinced that 108 gr. Berger BT Target will shoot in any 6mm - give this one a try. It's just about the easiest bullet to tune that I've come across.

I tried the RDF just to see if I could get one of these to perform with consistency. Still lookin'.

The 107 gr. SMK is another easy button in my two XCs.

I found the 109 gr. and 115 gr. Bergers to be a bit fussy with both powder charge and seating depth. I shot up a box of each and moved on.

The 112 gr. Barnes surprised me. I decided to try this bullet because a number of 6 GT shooters in cyber-land have reported excellent results with it. That bullet has earned a spot on my loading bench. It doesn't shoot quite as tight as the 105 gr. Hybrid or the 108 gr. BT Target, nor is it as easy to tune as the 108, but the precision is not far behind. It's quite a bit less expensive than the Bergers and it has a really good BC. The published G1 BC of .624 is a *bit* optimistic - my drop figures put it in the .580 - .590 range. I'll shoot the Barnes with confidence.

So, the 105 Hybrid, the 108 BT Target, the 107 gr. SMK and the Barnes 112 are the line up for me, in that order.

I've found the Peterson brass to be excellent. Dimensionally consistent and tough. I don't think you can go wrong there. I skim turn my brass but I have the original measurements in my notes somewhere. I'll get back to you shortly with the neck thickness numbers.

I'll strongly echo Kurz's powder recommendation. RL-16 is outstanding in this case. It delivers speed and precision without having to step on it. Great stuff. I get 3,170 fps with the 105 out of my 28" barrel at modest pressures with a charge weight of 39.7 gr. and the shot string stats are excellent.

I'm using Forster dies for the XC and I'm happy with them.

Nice round, the XC. The more I work with it, the more it gets the nod over my Dashers The extra speed is welcome on breezy days.

What kind of velocity and barrel length have you been running?
26" barrel lengths on everything I have built, (all hunting rifles). Velocities have been between 3030-3080fps depending on barrel. Somewhere near 40.0gr of R16 or H4350 has been the sweet spot for me using either Norma or Peterson brass and CCI primers.

I like the 105 and 115 you mentioned. So far I haven’t heard of anybody getting precision they are happy with using the 109s (including me). There have been a few discussions on this forum about the 109s.

Tubb T2K Spec-Tac-Lr, 27inch 1:7.5 twist Schnieder, Peterson LR brass, HBn coated DTAC 115RBT, CCI BR-2 primers, 39.5g H4350, MV=2975fps, SD in single digits, Tubb sizing and seater dies, .2435" 21st Century expander mandrel after sizing, no neck turn, no anneal, seat .020" into lands, tumble in walnut, barrels last 2500 rounds, I get about 20 reloads out of the brass before the primer pockets let loose

Gun shoots .2MOA all day every day and twice on Sunday off of a good rest and bag. What more can I ask from a non BR gun ? :-)

I think the thing that sets the 6XC and the DTACS apart from the other 6s are

1. D. Tubbs dies. The sizing die is a work of art
2. The super high BC of the DTACs as well as the manufacturing consistency
3. DTACS are Hbn coated making seating much smoother not to mention the barrel remains easier to clean.
4. Look at the hardware that the 6XC and the DTACs have won both in the US and in European 300meter competitions.

Thanks guys. Lots of great info to process. Hopefully everything will start filtering in and I can try and work something up. Thanks again for all the help on this new one for me. Matt

As you see, I don't think you can go wrong with the little 6XC. I have 4 different rifles and each time I shoot one it becomes my favorite. A few years back it was the 6mm to be shooting than as mentioned the 6 BRA and Dasher came to the forefront as well as the new Creed. BUT as I get around I'm learning that many guys are finding their way back to the 6XC. I have several barrels I shoot in my t2k and as mentioned they all shoot well. Seems my favorite bullet is the 105 Hybrid and then maybe the 108 Berger for the same reasons as mentioned. I'm sure you'll come to the love the little 6 as well as I do. good shooting
