6mm 105 A-max

As soon as I rebarrel my BR(currently 12" twist) to a 8" twist, I have heard good things about the A-max. I really enjoy the explosions the 75gr vmaxes do, but the real long shots are tough in that Montana wind. How does the 105 A-max perform on prairie dogs? Don't want to just punch little holes. Thanks

My son got one somewhere around mid chest at 700 or 800 yds using the A-Max. Killed it no problem but no aerobatics. I think it is wishful thinking to expect the same short range result at long range.

My experience, also.

Wishful thinking, yes. I know I'm not going to get the same results as the v max at close range. But I want them to have some damage, at least DRT.

Jackrabbits, explosive!!! pd's kinda just tumble backwards rapidly with no verticle... could be the distance i use the 105's at too. ;D

My friend John Kruzan shoots the 105 A-Max in his Viper Dasher
one 1,000 yd plus. I have seen him make many 1,000 plus shots
on PD's and don't remember one ever crawling off.

I have pitched a few in the air at 600 to 650 with the A-max myself
but that is as far as I have shot them.

That's Ole Voldoc on the far side. We are having
a 1,000 yd shoot-off under the shade of a tree.

Out to around 800 yards, I would use the 87 grain V-Max. I have killed a PD at 1,020 yards with the 87 V-Max out of a 6x284. It went through both shoulders and pitched her over the hole and about four feet back. We dug around in the dirt and all we found was a wadded up shard of jacket material. They are still explosive at that range if you hit the dog in a tough part of the body, maybe not so much if it was a gut shot. I hit several that day over a thousand, but most were able to get in the hole. That's why I say past 800 I would go with the 105s.

I like them propelled with 33.5 grs of Reloder 15 ignited by a Rem 7 1/2. I try to load them just off the lands. I'm using a Hart HV barrel 30 inch 8 twist, with a brake. I don't remember any large entry or exit holes but the 105 seems to pack a pretty good punch at 1000 +. My kills at those distances didn't crawl very far if at all. Good shooting to you. John Kruzan

Thanks a lot guys. That's what I wanted to know. Seems like they work just fine. Thanks for sharing the pics birdog. I was considering the 87gr v max as well. I have a few hundred on hand, as they are my .243 woodchuck bullet.

Voldoc's favorite 1,000 yd. dog medicine is the 87 V-max.
He did stick a 105 Hybrid in for this shot though at 1400 plus
with a Bat BRX

That's impressive. Very difficult to do. When I rebarrel, I planned on rechambering for the BRX as well. Still don't think I can pull off 1400 yrds though.Maybe I'll try the 87grainers first.
