Just recently picked up a 6mm-06 I had built. Remington 700 action and Lilja barrel in an HS Precision stock. This is going to
Be an antelope gun. I have scoured through all the posts here in the archives and thought I might ask again about recent powder choices.
I started with 50 pcs of 270 brass. I have a couple hundred 95 grain Berger VLD. I have put a few rounds through it with some loads of Mag pro. Just getting started on load development and according to the Berger Manual MAg Pro is one of the speedier powders for 240 weatherby. Also I also chose MagPro as it was cheaper and available. Reloader 22 also shows as a great powder in the 240 weatherby, But I missed my chance at some a few months ago when I was not sure if I wanted to
Pay $60 a pound. Now lastly I recently came into possession of about 10 pounds of H4831 for a song. Would this be a contender for this round?
Most of the past posts on this round just started to get interesting when people stopped posting so I just wanted to bring it back up for some new info.

I've shot a '06 variant, the .243 Super Rock Chucker over the years. Shot 10 and 12 twist barrels, but mostly shot nothing over 75 grain, only used on varmints. H4831 has always been my go to powder. Have shot Reloader22 also, but always went back to H4831. I've always been satisfied with 1/2 inch or less @ 100 yards 5 shot groups @ a tick over 4000 fps with 70 grain ballistic tips. I would say H4831 would be equally as accurate with the heavier bullets also.

H4831 would work with the 95s, but it’s a little fast burning for that cartridge and bullet combo. I’d prefer H1000, Retumbo, RL26, N565, or even IMR 7828ssc

My cousin and best shooting buddy built a 240 Weatherby years ago and it loved RL22 and 7828ssc with 105-107gr bullets. The RL22 left a lot of room in the case, it’s similar to H4831, so that’s why I’d suggest something slower burning for optimum performance.

Magpro has consistently been one of the worst powders I have ever tried in any cartridge as far as accuracy goes. I have just never got it to shoot well for me. I would look hard at H1000 and N565. H4831 will probably provide great accuracy but will probably be a little slower. I would also turn the necks on those cases as well. I have done several 6.5-06s over the years and they have always shot better after turning necks.

Good info. I went with a 9 twist to maybe bump down to a 70 grain bullet for an occasional Praire Dog. Though my 20 br usually gets the splat factor on those guys. I have some 7828ssc also I will
Look into that. The 270 cases chamber fine but I will keep an eye on that if I am having issue dialing it in.

Depending on bullet weight that overbore cartridge will like slow powders. My 240 shines with 90-205 gr bullets and R26. It gained me 75 fps over R22 with similar pressure.

Believe it or not I even tried some R33 and it shot very well with 100 gr TGK s. The 06 case will be ever so slightly larger in capacity.

Lots of choices… I d say go slower than you might first imagine for powder burn rate. GL

90-105 gr bullets … dang fat fingers!

Keep us posted on your 6-06, I m very interested in barrel length and what kind of velocities you see/achieve. My 240 pushing 600 rounds and have been giving serious consideration to a 6-06 and using 25-06 brass so minimal chance of donuts and issues. Older I get the more I like “simple”. 240 brass is really the only knock on that cartridge.

I've used powders from the 4350 range to 7828 range in my 240 Weatherby through the years.
It's tough to beat RL22 for accuracy and speed combined. My rifle is sporting a 26" Krieger 7.5 twist.
The last couple of years, my hunting loads have been the 105 Berger @ 3100 using H4831. the 95 ballistic tips @ 3386 using RL22 and the 80 grain Barnes TTSX & RL 22 @ 3728.
All loads resulting in bang flop kills so far.

I am going to try to hit the range this weekend . I have a series of rounds loaded with Mag pro and will load up another series with H4831. I will keep my eyes open for soMe H1000.
We kept the barrel as long as possible so it’s 27 inches. Once I get accuracy dialed in I will check speed.

In the Handloader Oct. 2020, John Barsness shot a 90gr Swift Scirocco w 55gr H4831sc /3336fps-.68 3 shot group/24" Shaw 1/8tw. Seems like a good 6/06 load for antelope. Good luck on your hunt!

In my two 6mm Rem AI's I have had good success with H4831SC with everything from 87 berger VLD up to 108 Elite hunters. I used 4831sc with the 95 VLD and it shot very small groups at around 3400 FPS
