6MC2 Cartridge

R&B

Gold $$ Contributor
Does anyone have any information the 6MC2 cartridge? I think it was an obscure wildcat bench rest 6mm cartridge based on the 6mm BR Remington.

-Thank You

The only information I have is from 2006 which states it was 'from several years ago and used at Williamsburg'.

" looks exactly like a 6MC2 that was developed by three local guys (south central PA) quite a few years ago. Had some following at Williamsport for a while. If you need one for your collection,------- , I can send you a couple. Dies are available from RCBS and reamer from Clymer.

There is also a 22MC2 that was the same three guys with assistance from Shilen. The three guys didn't make any money off the deal but that was never their intent. Shilen, however, sold barrels by the railroad car.... "

I found the same information you quoted yesterday.

I looked on RCBS web-site and found no mention of 6MC2 dies. I went to the Clymer website and found no listing for any 6MC2 reamers. I'm sure this was a very obscure bench rest cartridge and not many people are familiar with it or have any experience with it. I will contact Huntington's and RCBS and see if they know anything.

-Thank You.

Howdy !

Are you thinking of the cartridge line invented by Smalley and McPherson; a more-common one being......

The SMc wildcats were mentioned in a few editions of "Varmint Hunter " magazine, back when it was in print.
And also apparently in " Precision Shooter " ( see article references listed @ the link, below )....

I don't believe " Superior Ballistics Inc " is a viable enterprise, anymore.
Mention of the designer having solid propellant rocket engine expertise is consistent w/ the Utah address
( Morton-Thiokol )

From memory, I don't recall the SMc's as being touted for ( short range ) benchrest use.
If memory does serve..... a 7mm variant was used for some " Dynamite Shoot " out West.

Superior Ballistics did tout a report quoting test results from Vihta Vuori that showed extremely consistent and
very low SD/ES numbers.

before you go down that rabbit hole you gotta ask what problem did it solve? will it still solve that problem today? is it worth the severe pain and financial distress to be the only guy in the country shooting one? if so then by all means you need one. takes a rare guy to go that far out following the little animals, but I applaud guys that do it. I have a drawer full of reamers used one time.

Thank you very much 357mag !!!

This is the type information I need to solve this riddle.

I think the 6MC2 might be a variant of the 5mm/35 SMc. I'll know more once I have the rifle and dies in hand. I'll make castings to get a better idea. I purchased and old Schultz and Larsen custom rifle with the M 54 action. Schultz & Larsen 6MC2 is stamped on the 27" barrel. The barrel measures 1.25" at the muzzle. The rifles weights 21 pounds :) The custom stock is setup to ride on bags. So I think the rifle was built for long range bench rest. Maybe the 6MC2 is a necked up version of the 5mm/35 SMc.

From what I understand the M 54 where 300 meter International Olympic quality rifles. When Mr. Sharpe started importing these rifles and actions some people where converting them to bench rest rifles. I've seen a few examples of these custom rifles with more conventional cartridge selection (.308 & 6.5 x 55 Swedish).

-Thanks again for all the info.

I'm a very poor man. I have no intentions of re inventing the wheel (LOL). I purchased a beautiful custom quality work of art in my humble opinion. The rifle was built but was never really used. From what I understand is it was fired maybe 10 times. I am simply a curious person and I'm only interested in interesting firearms. .308 and 6mm PPC are great cartridges but they didn't always exist. Someone(s) had the gumption, imagination and passion to take a chance. We are all better for it (LOL). We all know there some great cartridges that never caught on because of timing, marketing or ignorance. I personally think wildcats are fascinating. I love hand loading !!! So what is the harm of saving an obscure cartridge for the sake of it.

-Cheers

If you can find a copy, McPherson's book Metallic Cartridge Handloading, pursuit of the perfect cartridge (ISBN 978-1-57157-371-1, Safaripress.com) make numerous references to some of his patented cartridges and may make for an interesting read if you're curious.

Thank you.

I'll see if I can find a copy to add to my small collection of firearm literature.

Yesterday I received a new chambered barrel in 17/23 SMc from Superior Ballistics along with dies. Yes, they are still doing business. JCM24M

17/23 sounds like a very interesting round. I take it this a very serious varmint rig you're building.

Do you have contact information for them?
