6BRX or Dasher Specs for 600 Yards

Trying to decide on which caliber to chose for 600 yard shooting league at a local range.

I will be starting from scratch so I will have to purchase new dies with either caliber choice.

I am looking for reamer ideas on either one as I will have PT&G build a reamer for me.

I am leaning towards a no turn or light clean up neck so what would be the diameter I should go with ? .271 ?

Free bore on the Dasher seems .104 works well with 105 vlds, what would it be for the 6BRX?

Any feedback would be great on helping me decide!
Thanks,
Dallas

It will be strictly opinions on this one but here is mine:

BRX - has the advantage of the same ballistic performance and accuracy using a standard 6 BR die set. No custom dies needed.

Reamer specs - a .272 is a standard no-turn neck and works very well. Freebore as recommended by Kiff for the BRX is .104" for 105-107 gr bullets. So you have similar neck and freebore dimensions with the changes behind the neck.

Take your pick, mine was the BRX.

Gunamonth,

I understand that the Wilson die is not hardened and you can run the Dasher reamer in no sweat.

What about that Reading die? Isn't that hardened and you can't take a 6 BR die and just run a reamer into that. I thought you had to purchase the custom Dasher die from Reddiing. Last time I checked with Sinclair, they wanted $130 for the S Type FL sizing die.

I shoot a dasher, and love it.

Redding body die, Redding Type S neck die, and either a Redding of Forster Ultra seater will get you through with bullet seating. I would recommend a 25cal tapered expander too for forming a false shoulder for case forming.

0.272" for no turn neck.

Here is the big thing though, freebore. I see a lot of reamers around the 0.110", but I am very near ordering one for myself, which I will get a reamer with 0.140". This will result in getting those VLD/boattails well away from doughnut area, as well as give you the option of trying, hopefully) a slower powder. With a 107 Sierra and a freebore of 0.140", you still end up with a lot of projectile in the case. Of course, this freebore is really designed for the heavy 100grain plus match projectiles.

I would like to hear what guys think of the 0.140" freebore with the dasher. For me, it sounds perfect, and I cant see why it isnt used more other than being aboe to use a greater range of projectiles with the reduced freebore!

Cheers

Guys,
Thanks for the info so far.

How well are the .271 necks working for you or would you stick to .272?

Such a hard choice!

Dallas,

I shot a 6BRX for 600yds. It hold the LG IBS record 0.749". It is a 0.271" no turn neck. The record will fall this year to 0.711" shot by A 6BRX. Mike Davis has chambered a new barrel for the same brx 0.272" neck and made me a F/L die.

Both rounds shoot great, it will not matter, they both work.

If I were starting from scratch, I would pick a Dasher, because of factory dies. Get a Wilson seater reamed and get a Redding "S" F/L die.

But if you are doing your own work, flip a coin, it will not matter.

Guys,
Thanks for all your thoughts!

I talked to Dave at PT&G and I am going to go with the Dasher with .272 neck with .104 free bore.

Last question;
Could some one point me in the right direction for dies with part #'s.

And which die will I need for creating the false shoulder.

Thanks,
Dallas

Dallas, to form the false shoulder for the 6 BRX and 6 Dasher I use an K&M Expandiron in 25 cal.,25 caliber expanding mandrel) to expand the 6 BR case to 25 cal.then just run it into your bushing die that you are using. This will form the shoulder to hold your case to fireform. I am sure there are other way's to do it but I know this method works and you don't have to purchase much extra.

Dallas,
Redding 6mm Dasher Full Length Sizing Bushing Die. Sinclair p/n RD77648. Once you expand up to .25 cal you might be better off using a standard Non Bushing/6mm BR Sizing Die to neck back down with. Bushings do not have much of a radius on them and may colapse the neck going from .25 cal to 6mm.

I've made over 3500 6 Dashers using a bushing to neck them back down from 25 cal. and have never collapsed a shoulder yet.

Can't say it won't happen, but.......
