6BRX forming brass

I feel the need to get in on this one, I chambered a 6mm for BRX and attempted to fire form the cases, notice is attempted. I was trying not to burn out my new barrel and to use some 65 gr Watson BR bullets for the fire forming. I did jam the bullets .020 and thought that this would get it done. Bottom line the case fractured, blue brass and powder into my face, If I haden't had glases on I would have lost my eye, busted the stock in several places. My point here is that the above information is good, don't short cut it.

DennisH and others,
How has your fire forming for your 6brx been going? I never got my Witchita to fire form on a regular basis so I quit trying with it and just used the Savage it worked great. The cases that didn't make competition grade brass I use in the Witchita. It has a 1:10 Hart that started life as a 20" .243 chambered by Fred Sinclair I don't know how long it is now, maybe 18.5" and 65 and 87 grain v-max shoots in a ragged hole, 100 grain SGK's shoots awesome also so even though I built it for fire forming and it didn't work out for that, its a great little varmint rig or if I were into sort range BR I think it could be competitive on a local level.

PALarson,
I am real sorry to hear about you rifle but I am real glad you still have your hands and eyes :o I tried the smaller bullets and it didn't work I am glad I didn't encounter the same problems you did.

The straight firing method continues to work fine, for me. Load up a standard 6BR combo, with any 85 gr. or heavier flat base bullet, seated to the base of the case neck, and use a slightly smaller neck bushing for more bullet pull, seated .010" into the lands, use any primer with the thicker .025" cup, and go shoot-em. A perfect, fully formed 6BRX case with the first firing. One box of 20 has been loaded 22 times, and all are trouble free. What a great cartridge/ would not hesitate to build another, and probably will. ;)

Frank,
That's funny, when I checked Show new replies to your posts the last three on there you were the last to post in and they all had something to do with a 6brx :D
I still use the same basic method you are using except I get the 105 fb speer bullets cheap so I use them and jam .030 or so. ith the exception of a pierced primer every once in a while I have perfectly formed brass as well, I tried all three popular methods and found this to be the best for me with the least amount of work to the brass and the least messy ;)

Wayne: We are on the same page for bullet choice, any of the longer, heavier weights, but a flat base for more bullet/case neck contact. Maybe that's the reason I can get away with only .010" of jam compared to using a boatail that will have less bullet/neck contact. Whatever I stumbled onto is working for me. Just blind, dumb luck. ;)

Started fire forming my brass yesterday, so far everyting is going fine! Brass is looking good.

Using 30grns of RL 15 and variour 107 and 108 bullets! .030 in the lands

Dennis,
Glad to hear your project is getting under way and the forming is going good.
Best of luck to you with your new outfit, when you get it dialed in show us a pic of your new shoot stick and some groups, happy shooting ;)
Wayne.

P.S this has been a great thread.

Hi, latecomer to the BRX here. How are you determining the amount of jam or +touch? I have always used the stoney point tool but obviously that won't work without a formed case.

Wooger,
You can use a standard 6br case in your stoney point, that will be close enough to get a fireformed case, then you can make a modified case for your stoney point from your fireformed case, 5/16 X 36tpi tap if I remember correctly.

5/16 x 36 Tap for Stoney Point/Hornady Lock-N-Load modified cases.

I have an extra Tap and drill bit (quality) if someone is interested, I had to order a set of five each!

PM me, Dennis

I am done with bullets for fireforming the 6BRX. I have found Hodgdon Tite Wad powder at 19.4 grains with a false shoulder 25 caliber mandrel. I use 1/4 piece of toilet tissue, thanks to Alf for this tip packed hard over the powder charge. I have done the last 200 cases this way and am done with shooting expensive bullets, this leaves a nice sharp defined shoulder all good.

I used this method years ago in a 22-250 AI and it worked good, didn't need the false shoulder of course.
