6BRA can agg for 10 matches

Northridge

Gold $$ Contributor
I know this topic gets beat to death but really if your looking for something that may improve your yearly aggs I would consider the little improved 6BRA. this season I had a north ridge rifles built 6BRA from start to finish as my first target aging gun and it never let up. I bested my last season 2017 agg this season 2018 with a 5.609 agg for 10 matches in heavy class & securing !st place just edging out Tom Mousel with another impressive agg a 5.630 for 10 matches both men shooting a 17 pound rifles who needs a 35 pounder Lol. from making cases to finding a tune window to holding that tune threw a shooting season the little pee shooter did me well running a primary gun and a back up just in case that never rotated in for a agg target all season simply because the other rifle never went limp on Friday verification ladders. this was my best personal agg to date and ranks with the top few ever shot and I'm humbled by the results. this rifle really is not that special at deep creek as there are many in similar trim that could and do shine from month to month they just really humm when you find the spot...stay tuned next season as we have many shooters with fresh gear just dying to chase there agg targets in 2019 season.

big thanks to my parts list:

North ridge rifles built
stock 4" Gun stock laminate Deep creek tracker
defiance rebel drop port action
Krieger barrel
bixs andy trigger
kahlas optic
vapor trail bullets
tune well "secret sauce"

Congrats on a fantastic season,. Could you please post your speed and seating depth. I am doing load development at the higher node of 3090ish with rl-15 and the 103VT with no pressure it is coming along REAL well. But i know that is pushing things a bit......Thanks

Yes congratulations on your great season, I believe in a rifle/caliber that Aggs well for a season not just a good score here and there, it’s not easy staying in the winners circle match after match but the BRA when tuned well makes the task easier.

Congrats Shawn, world class. The AGG is where its at, that tells the story. David Torgerson was .1" off the 10 match agg in LG, mostly with his BRA as well. Is it bad that I dont get excited now unless a lg target is in the 1s or the HG is in the 3s? Seen so many good targets this year Im getting used to it :) You guys have really shrunk them down over the last couple years.

Shawn,

Getting it done on 10 10 shot targets on 10 different days is no easy feat. Your agg, to the best of my knowledge, is the 2nd smallest ever on earth. Which means in 2 seasons of use, the BRA case has the top 2 spots, and the 4th spot in what I believe is the most challenging aggregate in our sport.

Tom

Tom, you and I have spoke on this little cartridge and where we thought it would take us for literally hours in the off season before we could jump at it again this 2018 season. the 6BRA did just what we thought it would from the data collected from season past and pre season outings. I have many at deep creek that I talk shooting with but when it really comes down to the nuts and bolts of things I have a couple that I would really like to thank, David Torgerson thanks for always sharing your ideas and results with me anytime of day, Tom Mousel for continually Raising the Bar and proving to yourself and me that it is possible, your personality is infectious and the off firing line conversations never get old. Alex Wheeler for never taking no as a answer when seeking improved equipment options it helps everyone. lastly my brother and fellow shooter Jim Williams for always requiring me to "keep up" with what ever venue we are trying to perfect or master & to not be afraid to step outside the box to achieve the results we are in search of where there is one the other is not far away. I'm pleased to have been the guy running the gun etc. but really having a shooting family and firing line like the deep Creek Family is a tough crowd and if your willing by default you become more masterful by just shooting with them on a regular bases.

It goes in all directions. We all learn from each other. This group does not keep secrets, everyone knows what the other guys load is and if something good is found its shared. The guys here honestly want to see the whole group shoot well as a whole so we all share. You advance much faster when you learn not only from your shooting, but others as well.

That is our wind tunnel.

Rick, I am always a little hesitant to share exact data, not because it is really top secret but as I have found one variable different can and does change the results and undemine our goals because now we are tuning around line item data and not allowing the rifle to show its true potential. components can very batch to batch even if they appear to be the same, but if I allow said rifle to guide me the components more often then not will have a middle or tune window that will be repeatable and allow you to shape respectable groups. we have many 6BRA platforms at deep creek that can win a day or weekend or season doing the job very differently from gun to gun. the key is walking the walk and recording your results, rifles just want to be shot. from 2875 fps to 3050fps depending on components a 6 ackley will hummm… I have 1 platform shooting slow low 2900's and my heavy gun happens to hum upper 2900's. H4895 is a staple for the ackley more often then not, other powders of faster and slower burn rates also shine in this little guy. if I had more time to devote to my shooting Reloader 15 would be my "go to" powder as it shoots smaller than H4895 when your in the meat hands down, but reloader-15 density will drift as a season gets long as that is a additional variable I don't have time for. if I was to chase LT gun targets only for a season this would be my go to powder unless rifle trumps my expectations on target. bullets there are lots of options that work well with some time getting them ready. If you can afford a boutique bullet such as a 103 Vapor trail or one of Barts bullets long range options those are two options you will likely not be disappointed in. designs like the Berger 105 vld target or 108g options do a lot of work, if you want to be the odd ball in a group of men and have the time the berger 105 hybrid can work magic if you find it, if you don't you go from hero to zero rather quick as they really come undone when you blow through it. primer...sky is the limit here you can have massive swings in results based of primer being used for a given tune. low charge windows will often choose a federal 205 as a clear winner but upper charge windows will rotate a 205 out and the clear winner will often be like a cci BR-4 or even a cci 450 in the slower powders. if your action has a lesser strike energy or pin fall it will likely prefer a fed 205 as the primers cups are softer then say a br-4 or 450. ass this go's on and on it has become clear to me why there wasn't a simple short explanation.

Thanks for taking the time and sharing your thoughts and findings. I am not sure i understand what you mean by the RL-15 density will drift? Do you mean the speeds will become slower of faster depending on the outside weather conditions?

what I mean is Reloader 15 is more vulnerable to daily changes in temp humidity etc. so a given density will not carry day to day. like H4895 or like H4350 if a day is hotter or colder etc. even if velocity slows or picks up a tad these powders will continue to hold a given tune to a point. there is less built in forgiveness with Reloader 15 but if we are talking squeezing everything out for absolute best targets & have time to verify charge before every match Reloader 15 will shoot smaller but you better be on it..

Thanks for you time once again Shawn. I see tunes change with in daily conditions shooting 6ppc 100-200 BR. I have not had the need to load at the range since learning how to use an Ezell tuner to over come to an extent ( my ability restricting ) these daily changes. I see this working with my BRA as well with the 15. But i have not played with the tuner at 1K yet. Out to 400 it has worked as hoped. Time will tell.................Happy Shooting

Best Regards
Rick
