6BR vs 6x22-250 vs 6-250 Savage

I will never Marry myself to lapua brass. its good, but its not that good. sorted domestic brass will do just as good for most applications and Winchester has always been very durable for me allowing as many loads as lapua. to each his own though.

Chuck,
What do think make the 6BR so good? it is the Lapua brass. The best brass made is the Lapua 6BR and the 220 Rus for the 6PPC. Why do you think the 6BR and BR imp's own 600 yds benchrest. I did the 6XC and know other shooting the 6X47L that could not run with the 6BR's. I shot 3 IBS 600yds shooting a 6BRX.

The 6BR IMP are the way to go for long range,

I seriously thought about the Dasher, but just don't want to play with fire forming. I know its lazy, but just stretching a neck is about the extent of wildcatting I want to do.

In reading through your posts it appears that you'd prefer to stay away from fireforming, and want something that could be a repeater, etc. (extra prep free) ;).

Nothing at all against the 6br family as they are accurate and I have one. And having intimate experience with the 6x 22-250 and the 6xc.... If I was in you shoes I'd go with either of those and chamber for a no turn neck. You can buy Norma 6xc brass or simply neck up the 22-250 brass to 6mm, load and shoot. The xc is capable of a bit more MV and I think better brass life especially if you tight chamber it. JMHO. WD

mark,

I think case design and powder volume to bore size have a part in why the 6br is so good. if Winchester made 6br brass to the proper dimensions there would be a LOT of shooters using it and there would be some winning matches with it. matches are won all the time with domestic brass in other calibers.

Chuck,

Remington does make brass for the 6BR, It is Remington round. When Norma and Lapua started making 6BR brass everything changed. You can make 6PPC brass from Win 7.62 x 39, but you don't see any benchrest shooters doing that. Winchester is good brass, I use it in most rounds. I have shot BR's for over 20 years. Started with the Rem brass, then the Lapua, it makes all the difference in the world. I have shot 1000yd and 600yds benchrest for 13 years. The first thing you start with is the best brass you can get. You spend $1000's on guns, scopes, powder, and bullets, What is the extra cost for the best brass.

mark,

you know as well as anyone that f-class and long range BR are entirely different animals. you also know as well as anyone that the 6br norma reamers don't fit the Remington brass worth a hoot. the OP is interested in f-class and I will still contend that different matches are won all the time with domestic brass. ask around about the 6xc and see how many people have won with reformed 22-250 brass. when I built my short range BR rifle it was going to be a 30BR. at that time lapua 6br brass was absolutely unobtainable. I ended up building a 30x44 and used Winchester 308 or 300 savage brass to form it. it was very competitive in short range score shooting and would AVERAGE well under 1/2" groups at 210yds. I really doubt lapua brass would have changed anything. as a matter of fact, I formed some out of lapua 308 and it was much thicker in the new shoulder area and that caused hard extraction. I gave up on it immediately. I respect your opinion but mine is that lapua IS NOT the end all be all of competitive brass.

Chuck,

I did go with a 6XC, to get more speed over a 6BR. I used Win 22-250 brass. I could not get it to shoot less than 3" at 600yds. I cut the chamber off and rechambered to 6BRX, started shooting sub 2" Better round and better brass. The Remington brass will fit a 6BR Norma chamber, but the Norma brass will not fit a Remington, even if the neck length is shortened to fit Rem length, Norma and Lapua is larger in the butt than the Remington. F-class and BR are different animals. A 1/2 MOA gun in Fclass would be a good gun. A 1/2 moa (3") at 600yds BR would put in the lower half of finished list. I not saying other brass are not good, they are. Not all Lapua brass is as good as the 6BR brass, but the Lapua 6BR is some of the best brass made, bar none. All of the 30BR guys are shooting Lapua. Sound like you have not used the 6BR lapua, you should give it a try. The 6BR and 6PPC started about the same time, the PPC brass was much much better, that is why the PPC took over.

mark,

not sure what makes it sound like I havnt used a 6br? I have and I love the round but I don't like being limited to one supplier of brass. especially one that has been known to leave a shortage from time to time. I started using the 6TCU and find it to do nearly as well as the 6br with readily available brass. it certainly isn't as accurate on average as a 6br but VERY few rounds are. sorry your 6xc didn't work out for you. mine is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned and I have shot a number of groups in the 0's at 100yds with the 115 dtac and you guessed it, domestic brass.
