6BR vs 6-284

Does any one have any thoughts on which cal would be better for mid range shooting. It seems like everyone is trying to get more velocity out of the BR family, and I was wondering why not go to the 6-284. Thoughts would help on my decision on which to build, thanks

Jack,

The 6 BR is the round you want. Great accuracy, Great barrel life. You did not say what you going to shoot. The 6 BR will go past mid range. With fast twist barrel and heavy bullets. It is the round for 600 yd benchrest and will do great at 1000yds also. If you want to shoot Varmints, it's the best. I like the 12 tw barrel with bullets up to 80 gr and the 87 gr Vmax.

I've built, shot, and own a number of 6BR, 6BRX, and 6-284's. Any blanket statement about which is best is totally inappropriate! It all depends on what You want to do, what the conditions are, and what limitations you're willing to accept!
Examples:
1000 yd benchrest with a 17# Light; Wind 10 or less and fairly steady, I'd use a 6BRX! if wind was over 10 and switchy, I could get a better score with 6-284!
1000+ Yard Prarie Dogs - Since the wind is almost always well over 10, varying, and at different angles no BR based case is going to be as good as the 6-284!
600yd Benchrest; = 6BR, 6BRX, or Dasher!
Best groups 100-200 yds - 6BR, 13.5- 14 twist bbl, 68gr benchrest bullets (still not up to PPC accuracy)

Mr. Spears told you right, not that the others didn't, but his angle on things is right. If you are shooting varmints and enjoy explosive terminal impact, the 6x284 puts on a real show. But there is certainly a price you pay for the enjoyment you get, and that comes in barrels and powder.

thanks everyone, I just thought with everyone trying to get more velocity out of the 6br that I should consider the 6-284, the rifle would be used mainly for 500 and 600 yard F-class competition, naturally wind conditions could be anything.

If you want more "red mist" effect, you may want to consider one of the mid-sized cartridges, such as the 22-250, 6mm Remington, 6XC, or 6mm Creedmoor. The 22 Dasher/BRX also gives excellent velocity and is very efficient.

Don't think forum boss read your last post!
If I were building a 600yd benchrest/f-class rifle it would be a 6BRX or 6 dasher with Krieger or Bartlein 8 twist barrel

I agree. Maybe a 22br or Dasher/BRX.

I wouldn't wanna go 6-284 since barrel life would be horrible and from what I understand about fclass the strings are pretty long causing lots of heat in a caliber that overbore.

Their are several good cases to build on that are bigger than the BR case, I like the 6.5X47L necked down to 6mm if you need more velocity. Then you could jump up to the 308 sized case starting with the 243 Win and the 6mm SLR is interesting. The 284 is a 30-06 sized case and way too much powder space for the 6mm bullets to be practical, powder burned and barrel life. Recoil has a large affect on you when shooting don't ignore it.

totally agree with all of the above. i have and shoot both a 6mmBR and a 6-284. how much velocity from a 6 BR? i am getting 3600 fps with 62 berger euwin bullets using LT 32. the terminal ballistics on ghogs is almost too much. i haven't shot the 6-284 in awhile now since this BR is so darn accurate and very economical to load.

......................6 BR.........6 Dasher...........6x47 Lapua.......243 Win........6-284

If mid range f-class is your goal, I think the sweet spot is the 6BR. Easy to shoot, easy to load for.

My 9 year old son shot a 197 @ 600 yds with a somewhat customized Savage f-class rifle in 6BR. This was his very first time shooting a high-power rifle. He looks up afterwards and says "That was easy. Dad says this is hard. What's the big deal?"

If you want to have a little more edge, a 6BR improved (BRX or dasher) is what wins all the mid-range bacon around here. They're not quite as easy to load for due to the fireforming involved, but they shoot lights-out.

Seems like the bigger stuff isn't worth the recoil, or barrel costs. Plenty of guys use them, but they don't win.

I agree with 6XCshooter. I have shot most all of them and you sortof jumped right over the middle group of 6MMs. I really like the 6XC and the 6SLR.

The 6SLR is about ideal for what you want. It will push the 105s over 3000fps and the 115s at 3000fps. The other nice thing about it is you can use the slow burning powders and ger 3000rds out of a barrel. With the heavier bullets you can shoot in the wind with the 6-284 and the barrel will still last twice as long.

I have one that started life as a 6XC (Which I loved) But thought I needed more HP to push a 115 at 1000yds so rechambered to a 243SLR at 1800+ rounds on the barrel and shot it for another 1000+ as a SLR and now I am setting it back again and hope to get another 1000 out of it. Whats not to love about that!! Plus it shoot 1.5" 3 shot groups at 400yds if I do my part.
