6BR twist and bullet option

Looking at getting a 1-12 twist Krieger barrel for a bench/plinker gun running 68gr bullets. Last year I was using a 6CM to hunt with and it did great however, I have since moved on from the cartridge and wanted somthing dual purpose I guess. Id like to use as heavy a bullet as possible in the 6BR to replace that 6CM as my hunting gun. From a lot of what I've read, bullet weight does not matter much, but rather the length of the bullet. It just so happens there is usually a correlation.

Has anyone ever shot the Sierra 85gr BTHP in a 12 twist 6BR, will it be stable? Any other bullet suggestions for whitetail that would fit the bill for a 12 twist. If the 80s stabalize how do they look on targets, is the accuracy good?

Also, no I don't want an 8 twist, or to start with lighter bullets and as the throat erodes go heavier. lol

Kevin,
In my experience Sierra bthp bullets are very accurate but not a hunting bullet. There will be many who will jump on here and say I shot a rhinoceros with a 65 grain hp at 1100 yards on the run and it was stopped dead in its tracks one shot!….
Idk why you don’t want to go with a 1:8 I for sure would or even a 1:7 and shoot heavy bullets but if you want a 1:12 there’s good bullets that will work.

Interesting. I've heard a lot of stories about that 85gr from sierra being devastating. I'll keep looking though and hopefully find somthing. I want a 12 twist because I'm not going to be shooting it past 350 yards on targets or deer, and I was planning on shooting Ammerman or hottenstien 68gr bullets specifically from a bench or prone, and then pulling the barreled action out of the stock and putting it on a chassis and trying to use the 80s for hunting deer. I just don't see why an 8 twist would be necessary or desirable in my situation.

Edit: that being said, I'll take it into consideration.

I've used Speer 70 gr TNT's on Deer, (TNT's are actually a rather accurate bullet)
did exactly what I wanted it to, but was shot within 100 yds
Small entrance, made a mess of the lungs when passing through and tore the opposite shoulder apart/broke it upon exiting, Approx 4 inch exit wound channel
The deer made a reflex hop forward then just crumpled, instantly dead.
I doubt I would use the same bullet if I were making shots past 100 yds though.

Kevin,
They are devastating however if you screw up and it happens to hit a rib or front shoulder it will blow up on impact, a partition style bullet or well bonded bullet or a solid bullet won’t.

The 85 BTHP is a game king not a match king. It is a proven hunting bullet that will outperform most in its weight class. Shoot it with confidence.

ive got a 13 twist 6mm barrel only because it came with some used barrels i got. it does shoot 68s accurately 0to 300. that said if i was buying a new 6mm barrel i would get an 8 or probably a 7 or 71/2. that would stabilize the lighter bullets all the way to 105s or a little heavier. (7) Id also use 100gr+ bullets if i was hunting deer with a 6mm. i made the mistake of buying a douglas 22 cal barrel in 10 twist a few years ago. it will stabilize max 60grainers. wish i wulda got that one in a faster twist so i could shoot heavier bullets with it.

Those “match bullets” didn’t have any trouble today. A quick couple of hours after lunch. That’s a 10 twist BR on the right slinging Bart’s 80s.
Nice!! I like the looks of the manners stocks, and the weight as well. I kinda checked them off the list because I wasn't a fan of the adjustable cheek riser.l, but I can't remember why. Might have been the adjustment part I didn't like.

I hear you, but my reasoning is that the smaller bullets from what I've read and seen tend to be more accurate, and and for my ranges, I just don't see why I'd want to use an 8 twist. Also, the 68-80 grain bullets from what I see are alot cheaper.

The only thing that's holding me back from the 12 twist is that I'm worried it won't stabilize a sierra 85 grain BTHP. Other than that it'll be fed a steady diet of 68 or 80 grain bullets from Barts, Ammerman's or Hottenstien.

I can tell you that I won’t do another 10 twist. They’re too hard to tune. It’s 7.5, 12 and 13.5 for me.

I’d get the 12 twist and not worry about it stabilizing that 85 Sierra. Just shoot the 80 btsp instead, if you need a cheap option.

.272 neck and a .050 fb is perfect for most lots of Lapua brass and boattail bullets from 68-80 + grains.

N135 is MAGICAL.

That's what I wanted to hear, especially the N135! Also, I see that Barnes also has an 80 grain option as well, but if the 85 sierra wont stabilize ill probably go for the btsp anyway. Also, who knows by deer season next year ill probably end up having another bolt action built anyway.
