6BR Repeater

Has anyone used their BR box magazine? Works smoothly? No jamming/ feeding ok? Quality of craftmanship?

That looks interesting. For my part, I read on the web about modifying a 223REM AICs magazine and gave that a try. I'm no machinist, but about 30 minutes of careful dremel work seems to have produced a very reliable 6BRX magazine.

There is another thread on this in the varmint section.

Not much info there either,i am going to order a wyatt`s "BR" box for my .20BR and give it a try.

As soon as i have something i`ll post it over in the varmint section.

Phil.

Mike Bryan has an article on this website about doing this type of modification. I did this to my .22BR and it works great. Paul. 8)

I am going to build a 30 br for yotes and some mid range F at our local club. I found a photo guide for doing a mag box modification on this site. It is by a fellow named Mike Bryant. It shows photos of the box and the follower modifications. Seems pretty simple. Heck, even if I mess it up, it won't be cost prohibitive and I can just start over. If it shoots half as good as my 30 BR, I will be a happy hunter.

I use the AICS 223 magazines for my 6BR. A little work with a die grinder and a file and they are perfectly reliable. The only issue is that they require bottom metal to suit. I normally use 6 rounds in the mag but 7 will fit at a squeeze, I normally use 2 6 round mags for the matches I use the rifle in, it gives time for a mag change between exposures.

I have made the AICS 5 and 10 round 308 magazine work by using a spacer and a modified follower. I have also made the AICS 223 magazine work by some careful grinding of the feed lips. I am running a 22BR, not a 6BR, but I believe they would both work equally well. It can be done. Im still working on a better way.....

I posted the same question in the Varmint section. I broke down & just ordered one. It showed up this morning

I'm not super impressed with it just by the looks. A shipped price of $57.94; it looks like a Remington 308 box with feed lips cut & bent over. The follower is flat metal with spring clips bent over...

I'll stick it in my recent 20" barrel Rem 700 this evening & see how she feeds. Looks like I will have to do a little mod'ing to help it out.

I have a BRX with the Bryant Conversion & after a little experementation with spring placement (getting most of pressure farther back) it feeds VERY well.

Didn't have much time to fiddle with the magazine last night...

I did bolt it in the stock & as thought it will need some help. Needed a little shimming to get it where in needed to be. After some short fenagling I put a Rem 223 spring in & got everything bolted up. I palced a round in the mag. Shut the bolt & a perfect feed. Tried to place two rounds down & it would "pop" the 2nd round out. I will have to shim the sides of the mag to give more "pinch" on the case. It is too "loose" just dropping it in the HS precision stock.

From what I saw with a little help I think this mag will feed really well. It appears that as stated there will only be room for 2 rounds down but that's no big deal for me. However, it is not a "drop in" functional mag.

I will get a chance to mess with it over the weekend. I'll report back my evaluation but things looks like it will work.

Does it seem like it could benefit from having a spacer in the back of the mag, ala the Bryant conversion? In some of the 6br conversions I've tried, it seems like the feedrail position in conjunction with the shoulder of the 2nd case down has a major effect on reliability. If the top cartridge slips down over the shoulder of the case below prior to starting into the chamber positively, bad things happen.

Curious to see your updates.

I've had, or do have, several 22 and 6 Dashers, all on 700's, and have never had a problem with feeding, with no mods done to the magazine box.

I just load them somewhere in the middle of the box, and call it a day.

I do find that you can't dilly dally around when working the bolt though.....

Yeah, the news is I'm still effing with it.

The box places a single round in the perfect spot for a smooth feed. It will load just one down perfect everytime. Slow, fast, pausing... it just works. However, there is just too much spring tension with two down using the 223 rem spring I have.

I did make me a blocker from JB Weld steelstick (it's easy to work & turned out looking really nice). Also used some to shim the sides to get more "bite" on the feed rails. After a lot of trial & error I finally just fixed the box together (the split in the back was touching). No matter what I did it would NOT keep the 2nd round down. The Remington 223 spring just has too much pressure. I even bent the feed rails in slightly & it finally held both down but there was so much pressure it would "pop" the case out unless you closed the bolt really fast.

I was a lot more aggravated with this box Friday night than I should have been... I am going to cut a spring from an AR-15 magazine & epoxy to the follower. Hopefully I can get a more consistent spring tension before it gets really tight. It will just be more trial & error finding a good spring length; we'll see how this works. Hopefully I can get some more time to mess with it soon.

One down is better than NO down i guess.....

Keep us up to speed on your progress..

Thanks for the effort,

phil.

Coleridge,
You should try the magazine extension that they sell at Midway or Brownells for the 700s. It goes on in place of the the floor plate on the bottom of the BDL magazine.

It gives you a couple of extra rounds but the thing that may help you is it will relieve some of the spring pressure you are having. Might be worth a try. I have them on several rifles and they work great!!
