6BR powders???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
So,i was going to build a .223AI for popping squirrels and then gave the 6br some thought.

I was going to have to wait for a .224 barrel and I have a 6mm 14 twist in the safe,so that furthered my idea.

What powders are you guy`s using to launch the 55 noslers????

I have....

Varget

Benchmark

N133

N135

R15

LT32

and H4198

I would really like some AA2230,but I`ll just have to wait on it.

So are there any recommendations on the powder on hand or am I on a quest for something I don`t have on the shelf????

N133,Benchmark and LT32 should do well with the 55s

I use H335 in my 12 twist with 65gr Bergers. Because its what I have in that burn rate.

The 6br doesn't care what you feed it. I've came to believe

+1

I've fed mine with BLC-2, H322, Varget, and my current load is 8208-XBR. Only thing I found that my 6BR doesn't like is 87 grain V-Maxes!

Given your twist I would suggest 55 and 70 grain bullets, Ballistic Tip[s and Blitzkings. 133 for the lighter, and 135 for the heavier. I have friends that shoot these combinations with great success, and if you wan to really see how well your rifle shoots, do a careful workup with some custom benchrest bullets, in weights that are used in short range benchrest competition. For that, you may want to try a range of velocities, and not just be driven by the numbers.

I have a good load with Benchmark and 70 Nosler bt and R7 with 55 bt's. I think you could use your Benchmark with 55-70 pills.

My 6BR has a 26" Krieger 14 twist. I have only ever shot 65Vmax or 70TNT. Both shoot excellent and to same POA within 1/4". For a pdog rig and how it shoots I have no reason to try anything other than my first loads with 2015BR Accurate. 3410fps with 30.5gr w the 65Vmax and 30gr with the TNT. Rem brass and 7 1/2's. IIRC .002 nk tension. Only componets/weights I have ever tried and have roughly 800rds through it. Would have more but no decent dog shooting anymore :(

If you'll excuse the fuzzy pic, you'll get the idea:

In my experience, the 55's like a slightly 'faster' powder than you might think, due to the short bearing surface of the Nosler 55's and VMax 58's. I've also had good luck with Benchmark and Re7...depending on what the barrel likes. The short bearing surface bullets tend to like more of a jump than a jam, at least in my 6BR and the others I've tinkered with. Seating depths of .030-.040 'jump' from just touching have worked well. My own 6BR has a Lilja wide land 3 groove barrel and it wants the bullet closer to the lands.

In short, make sure and work with seating depths with the short/light bullets in the 6BR.

For what it's worth.... -Al
