6br out to 1k

I have a new savage 6br and have shot 1 match at 600 and happy so far.Does anyone shoot f/class at 1000 with there 6br ?.I am shooting 107smk and the winds are bad at the range where the 1000 match will be shot.

Have never shot the 6BR at 1K myself but have watched several F Classers over the past few years in practise and competition shoot their 6BRs.

They held their own on the old one minute inner ring target. When the change was made to the 1/2 minute inner ring they struggle on a windy day.

But this could be said of any medium capacity cartridge, not just the 6BR.

The trend in Canadian F(O) is to larger cartridges to buck the wind with high velocity and heavy bullets. A few still compete with the 6BR at Long Range but the scores tend to be at the bottom of the score list when shooting against the 6.5 and 7mm short magnums.

Hi Matt
try a bullet with a higher Ballistic Coefficient you need 530 and above the higher the better then careful reloading a you will be up there with the best of them best of luck in your comps
best regards

Last year I lost the Arizona Palma Championship (F-Class) to a 6BR by one "X" after three days of shooting. The locals said that those were the calmest three days they had ever seen. So, if the wind had blew the way it usually does in Phoenix, he would not have stood a chance against my 284 Shehane, but the wind never showed up! ;)

Mattt,

as 100yardstare says, it's down to a mixture of the range (ie wind) conditions and the competition. You'll hit the target fine at this range, so go ahead and try. Be warned though - some people shoot once or twice at this distance and decide it isn't for them - too hard, too much competition. Others try it and get the bug in their first half dozen shots. And, it can be a mighty expensive bug in money and time - upgrading your handloading practices, deciding you need a better barrel, then a better rifle, then a better scope ...... and before you know where you are, you're shooting a 7mm short magnum and divorce / bankruptcy lie around the corner!

If the wind is 'easy' - and that's not the strength, rather how often it changes and by how much between shots, 6mmBR with 105-108gn bullets can be very competitive indeed. If it isn't easy .... well look at it this way, you'll learn more about wind doping than the people shooting hot six point fives and sevens.

Mattt,

Your 6BR will be fine. I was shooting 6BR at 1000 yds benchrest 9 years ago, when only a few were shooting 6BR. Now many are shooting 6BR and 6BR IMP.

thanks for the input.I have shot 308 out to 1k but after shooting my 6br I want to give it a try at 1k. The winds are always tricky at Sac Valley where I shoot but everyone has to deal with it there. I hope to get better at reading wind conditions there but that will just take time . ;D

Matt, you'll find a few people at Sac shooting the BR and it's children at the 1K line. I've shot mine there and it did pretty well, my limitation being reading the wind.

Eric

Don't worry, everything will be fine at sac with that chambering at 1000. No need to go crazy and shoot one of those 7mm's. ;)

I have competed many times in 900M (1000 yd) F-class matches with a 6BR. The Western Canadian F-Class championships were won this year by a 284 with 180's, but second place (By only one point) went to a 6BR. A good driver makes all the difference. 6BR is easy to make work well and is very forgiving. Its consistently excellent results teach you to be a better long distance shooter.

I have a large hay field and i can shoot to one mile at steel gongs. A Berger 105 Hunting VLD (from a plain 6BR) will reach and hit a 22" steel saw blade 10 times out of ten if the mirage is on your side.

Yup What He Said !!!

I was the one that won the Canadian Western Championship, with my 284 Shehane and the 180s. It was very hard to Shake that little 6Br, but the Driver ( Richard ) was Awesome.

Mattt
Learn to shoot that 6Br first and you will do well, thats what i did ;)

See you on the line in three weeks! 8)

I shot next to Kevin in that match and he did some fine shooting to beat Erik. If Erik had not experienced some equipment issues, he doubtless would have won.

We had five 1000 yard matches at Camp Pendleton this past weekend. The two on Saturday, I used my F/TR Savage but the scope broke. Sunday, I took my 6BR Viper SS for the remaining three matches. I shot first relay in the morning and made high F-Class score for the tournament, 198-9X. Then I went to the pits for three relays, came back and scored before shooting again. In the two and a half hours that intervened, an 8-12 mph switching headwind developed. There really is no reason to discuss my scores in the last two matches. ;)
