6BR NRA Prone rifle

Got a good chance to shoot my tube gun today @ 600 yards
I put a new Bartlein Barrel on it chambered in 6BR. I had to do VERY little load develpment to find a good load. Infact all loads I tried would have shot a 200 out 200 possable @ 600 yards. The winner load is a classic 6BR load right from the pages of this web site.
30Gr Varget,105VLD Berger, Norma Brass, 2 thou Neck tension, .010 bullet into the lands, CCI 450 primers.

Ellisio B1 tube stock, single shot). Remington Action, trued). Dave Kiff fluted Coned Sako extractor bolt, GTR firing pin spring and shroud. Rifle Basix Trigger, Bartlein 1:8 twist 5R 30" heavy Palma. Iron sights,,Centra rear Right site front)

Weather was Very Dark and cloudy but Very little wind.

On the MR-1 600 yard target I squeeked out a 200-16X. This little case is a flippin Hammer at 600 yards!!! What a lot of fun to shoot.
Lynwood Harrel just sent me a Die in the mail so Im ready for the season. I can see why the euopeans shoot this case at the very demanding 300 meter target!!!

Nice shooting, Russ! It's easy to fall in love with the 6BR. I built my first one for 300 Meter shooting and tried it at 600 one day as a lark. It's been hard to shoot anything else at 600 ever since!

Yep! Very nice little package. I have the same gun and could not be happier. Not to mention, 6BR is cheep to shoot!

German was right, this little case is a real winner @ 600 yards. The nice thing about it is there is no false shoulder this, fire form that, turn necks to here. Just load it and shoot it. I have two rifles that have turn necks and that is alot of work when your doing 200 peices of brass per rifle.

The 6BR is just not picky. in fact the bullets just seem to know where to go. I shot one at the the sky and it curved down and went right in the X ring. ; ) Just kidding. Non the less it is alot of fun to shoot.
My reamer is a .272NK for Norma brass and .104 FreeBore.

Steve has produced Three National Championship Quality rifles for me. This year one put up a 5th Place finish in the High masterclass in the LEECH CUP. And the another one Put up a 15th finish in the PALMA indv. Match., Palma 20) Not to mention the 447 out of 450 for the Palma Team Match.

Last year the 6.5X284 Squeeked out a 8th place Over all At Camp Perry While I was sand bagging in the Master Classification.

I really have to Thank Steve for doing such great work, he really stands behind his product. I know every one reading this can appreciate a good caftsmen when your putting in your hard earned money into a project such as this.
So who deserves the credit--- THE Archer or the Arrow maker?

Fellas:

I tested some more bullets today. The 600 yard range was tied up so i went over to the old 300 yard range. Put up a 300 Meter target to test two loads.
I loaded 25 rounds of two bullets 107gr Sierra Match Kings and 95Gr Berger VLD's. All with Varget and CCI 450 primers.
With my trusty side kick and shooting partner Doug pulling targets for me I went to work.

I have enclosed two pictures of the results. Its amazing how easy this thing is to load for It simpley is not picky. If it can shoot on the 300 Meter Target with a 3 5/8" ten Ring and a tiny 1 3/4" X ring it can do about anything. One picture has a Quarter on it to compare the target size.

Both groups had Five sighters and 20 shots for record. On the 95Gr Bergers we used White round pasters with corrisponding shot numbers on them. Makes for some great feed back. My only regret is it took me so long to build one of these fine shooting hammers!

Russ,

You've got to change the date on that camera!

Seriously, that was some mighty fine shooting yesterday. I can't believe the accuracy. On the 107SMK string, Russ shot the first three shots high on the 10 ring, came down one click, and then just hammered the center! The 9 at 11 o'clock was called. We had a 5-6 MPH left-to-right wind with gusts that probably affected a few of the shots. I used a 3" spotter that I think caused some problems for Russ. 15 holes in the spotter...

I can't wait to get mine!

Doug

I have to say that if you where treated any where near as poorley as that camera and had been as many places in the world as it has, not all your buttons would work either. That last trip to the desert really took its toll,I'm lucky it takes pictures at this point. A new Camera will have to wait after another CG trigger, New chronograph, two Right Sight bases, and a big bullet order. By then it will be time to order a couple more 6.5 Barrels.

I pointed up some 6mm 107's to test on Thursday @ 600 yards. Ill give a report on that after completion.

I just wanted to give everyone a small update.
I got roped into a sighting in a buddies deer rifle today so I went to the range. JD Fletch let me test drive his CED Chronograph. I have been wanting one and now I really want one!
My old Croney was giving me some slow numbers so I took the Eliseo R1 to confirm this with the CED.

Check out this group I hastely shot over the CED to confirm velocity numbers!!! It measures .196 center to center. The Average Velocity was 2839fps and the Extreme spread was 4 FPS!!!! with a SD of 1!!!! Granted this only a 5 shot string but that is my lowest ES ever combined with a small group. Too bad I dont have a benchrest stock for this gun. It really is a good shooter.

Russ,

Maybe I need to get the CED back and start shooting through it for matches if you think it would help! Did it confirm your suspicion that your chrony was giving false numbers? I think the average was about the same as I recall...

Doug

Doug

My suspicion was unfounded. the velocity is very close to what I was getting with the croney. Looks like I have a slow barrel, but I really do not care as when it shoots groups into the 1's that 70fps does not matter one little bit. When i opened up your bag of goodies I was very suprised at the tripod. That thing is a tank!!!! I hate to guess what a nice tripod like that costs, Im guesing about 3 times what the CED costs.
I hope your rifle shoots as good as this one does when you finally recieve it. Im excited about it and its not even mine!

To ALL NRA PRONE SHOOTERS
CAUTION!!!!

The 6BR can be extremly habit forming! If you experience an erection for more than four hours please see a doctor. Side effects could include blurred vision, anal discharge, and diseyness. Your scores may or may not increase by ten points. Follow this web sites load map as directed. Never drink while reloading or shooting the 6BR. Ask the moderator if this case is right for you!!! ; )

Coach:

If you want the shock of your life, try your 6BR hammer at 1000 prone on a still day or in light conditions. It will just cut the middle out of the X-ring.

Hope to shoot with you again soon,
Jim

Another update.

With the Ammo I mentioned in an above post. I headed to Chattanooga TN to shoot a 3X500 yard match. This thing is a freak of nature!!! J Hardy didnt show up so I was pretty relaxed, Sometimes I make big mystakes when good shooters like Jim are around.Any way, I have to say that for a mid range cartridge this thing is really hard to beat. Of the three matches the 2nd was the best despite the sub freezing temps.
200-16X's on the MR65 target with iron sights. That is one X behind the current National record.
So again if your a NRA prone shooter who is shooting mostly Mid range matches. I highley recomend the 6BR. In fact I would not be scared to shoot this thing at 1000 yards as accurate as it is.

RussT

Can you enlighten me about your coned bolt as opposed to the regular that Pacific sells for the Remington. Thanks

Spike

Coach Russ:

I sure wish I could have made that match as it sounds like everyone had a great time. Like you, I would have been shooting my 6BR prone gun on the GR stock, just like my 284 Shehane.

You were relaxed because I was not there? Don't tell lies, as I am not fit to carry your shooting mat to the line.

Remember, the most fun I have ever had in a match was when you went out of your way to coach our pickup team team at Camp Perry in 2007. We shot pretty dang good and almost knocked off some of the brand names!

I got to brag on you. I coached HS sports for a long time before I decided to become a country lawyer, and I know what it is like to instill confidence to someone I coached. That is the confidence you gave me in that team match. I can honestly say that your coaching at Perry is one of the defining moments in my prone career as I realized that this could be fun -- Your coaching, John Whidden's inspiration, Anna Kinney's teaching me how to fit my prone guns, the challenge presented by my eye doctor, and giving all the credit to the man upstairs -- those things changed it all.

While you are at it, please keep Matt Kubic in line. I am not authorized to practice law in Tennessee or Port Clinton, Ohio!

See you soon.

Semper Fi,
Jim

Jimm Your gonna have to stop this ranting, Im starting to get embarrassed. Since you have coached sports before, you know what a joy it is to coach/ teach or mentor someone that has the inner fortatude and just plan hunger to improve oneself. With that being said-- the pleasure was all mine sir.
OK about Mr Kubic, Im sorry sir butt im just one dern man. A guy has his limitations!!!! have mmercy on me boss.

Spike

Have you ever purchased some small item and have it lead into a big project that cost you a few thousand dollers. Well that is what that Kiff Bolt bolt did to me. I got it Straight from Kiff back in 2005. We ordered it from him with it coned, fluted, Sako Extactor, Ill never do that again) and bolt handle and knob. Its intension was to replace a 223 bolt face to make a Palma rifle. NOne of that happened. it turned into a Prone rifle all its own with Match Sights and its own scope.

If you want one Call Dave and he may have some or will make you one up. My Gunsmith now has the means to do M16 extactors, Ill be doing that from now on.

Another update on the 6BR NRA prone rifle. If your thinking of this case for Midrange prone, Id have to say dont wait!! We shot a 300 Meter match on Saterday. The last string of twenty was 196-13X's in some high fishtail winds. The X count was unreal!!!! That 300 Meter target has a 1.7" X ring. The wed. before I went out to get some Zero's and shot a 199-13X on the target. It is a freak of Nature I tell you. Tooooo easy.
No sorting brass, No turning necks,no weighing bullets, just dump in 30gr Varget stuff a berger on top and shoot it. Done.

I know its an old post, but found it researching the Eliseo in a 6BR and I want to give Steve Wald a plug too. I have had Steve do 3 barrels for me based on Russ's recommendations. Couldnt be happier with his work. I could but I dont hink I can talk him into being my neighbor.. So in short, I am going to build a 6BR Tube like Russ's with Steve doing the chamber work...
