6br max load with 105VLD

I am loading up some 105 VLDs using RE15 and 450CCI primers. Quickload tells me 30.3 grains is max. Does that sound right? Just want to double check.

Anybody care to share their RE15 and 105VLD loads?

Thanks,

DoubleG

My BAT SV 28 inch Pac-Nor uses 31.5 of RL-15 with the 105 Berger VLD and 210M primers, but this is the only 6mm BR barrel I have that will take that much RL-15 safely.....

I use 30.5 grains of Reloader 15 with 105 Berger VLDs. I have a 28" Krieger 1 in 8 twist and have gone above this load safely in my rifle but accuracy was not as good as 30.5 grains.
Cheers

G,

Quickload is indeed a great source for starting loads, and plenty much more other information. Use it wisely, and always start a good 10% under.

Eventhough all here forwarded "formulas" are in line with the majority of shooters, I can give you testimony of several unfortunate cases where a dose of anything over 29.0 grns of RL15/CCI 450 would deem your bolt properly locked in the action. There are even a few known cases out there in which going past 28.5 gr of RL-15/CCI 450 would evoke ill thoughts. One of my several 6BR rifles can't go past 29.2 of the same, and I use moly.

Either way, and not knowing which chamber dimensions and barrel combination you have, play it safe from the beginning, specially shooting those VLDs touching the lands. Oh, and please do let us know what worked best for you.

Well I got to do some shooting this weekend. I just shot out to 100 yards. I had loads from 29.5 to 30.5 in increments of 0.1. I shot 5 shots with each load. Below are the results. You can see the powder charge written on the target. Looks like 29.7, 29.8, and 29.9 worked the best. I did not see ANY pressure signs. There was no sticky bolt, no cratering, or anything. Looks like the groups were getting tighter toward the end. I could probably reach the next node around 31 grains but that might be too hot. I am going to stick with 29.8 or so for now. I will shoot through a chronograph to check my velocity. If the velocity is go I will stay there.. If not I might try to reach the next node.

I would load 10 each (plus foulers) of the 29.8 and 30.5 loads and go shoot 2 groups of 5 with each load.

Looks to me like that 30.5 will shoot as well.

I think you are right.. I am going to load up from 30.5 to 31 and look at the groups and for pressure signs. I should be real close to max pressure. If I see any sign I am going to quit. I think that group might tighten up in a 0.1 or so.

I loaded 29.7, 29.8, and 29.9 grains of RE15 this weekend to see which was the best. I also loaded 30.6 grains to test for group and velocity.

I shot the .268 neck, 105 VLD, 450 CCI, and 29.8 grain load of RE15 through a chronograph and it was running right at 2800 fps. That was a little slower than what I wanted. I want to get around 2900 or a little more.

I then shot the .268 neck, 105 VLD, 450CCI, and 30.6 load of RE15 through a chrongraph and it was running about 2900 fps. I saw no pressure signs. Bolt lift was normal. The accuracy of this load was really good also. See the picture below. I shot at the "4U" on the target and hit right above it. Then took aim at the bullet hole and place 3 in the hole to the top right and one cut the original hole. I will have to shoot it some more but it is looking pretty good.

In order to shoot through more rounds I have loaded. I shot them at 500 yards. The results of the 29.9 group are shown below. The group was pretty bad in my opinion. I was aiming at the F on the target.

I shot the reminder of the 29.8 load and it did pretty good. I think I pulled that one low shot. My 4 shots are highlighted in red.

More testing next week. I will try 30.5 to 31 in 0.1 increments and try to shoot them at 100 and 500 yards.

those red dots are awful close together. Nice job. Where were you shooting and what caliber were the blue dots?

Limbic,

We were shooting in a friends field out around Sand Hill. We can get 600 yards in this field when it is dry. It was muddy as all get out yesterday.

The other shots are from my friends Savage FTR 308. The gun flat shoots. It is completely stock from the factory. Check out the group below. This is at 500 yards. His 308 shots are in blue and this gun has done much better than this. Ten of the shots in red are mine and the rest are another guys 6.5x284. I could not tell which shots were 6mm and 6.5 mm.

That 308 is really laying them in there. That is one hell of a stock gun. Easily .5MOA I'd guess. I headed to the range tomorrow with my BRX. Hopefully I'll get some equally good pics.

Your right... That 308 will do alot better than that. Those were some different bullets he was trying. It is impressive.

Post up some pics on here or the mdwfp forum. I want to see them. We need to get together and do some shooting. Your in Jackson area correct? Hopefully we will sling some more rounds Saturday. I want to be ready for Fclass at Bogue Chitto.

Well we got out this morning in the cold and windy conditions to do some more shooting. Paying no attention to the horizontal, I shot for vertical group at 500 yards. I had a few that had real good potential. The targets are as follows starting with the top left and moving to the right:

29.7 grains
29.8 grains
29.9 grains
30.6 grains
30.7 Had a hard time focusing on target for some reason
30.8 grains
30.9 grains

Last group was one shot each of 31, 31.1, 31.2, and 31.3 grains to try to find my maximum load but there were still absolutely no pressure signs on the brass nor a sticky bolt.

Well I brought the 6mmbr out this weekend in the snow. It was cold but still fun to shoot. I shot loads from 30.6 to 31.5 in 0.1 grain increments with 5 shot groups. I wanted to double check my data from last week. I have affirmed that 30.9 grains of RE15 is my load. This group was shot at 600 yards and witnessed by Lomaxmsu... This is the best group I have ever shot. Don Geraci builds an excellent gun!

G-
That looks very good! From the start with my 1st 6 Dasher in '04, I've been very impressed with tight vertical spreads out of the BR case, but that's one of the nicer groups I've seen. You should do well in the F-class matches.

Thanks Dennis... I have been real impressed with the 6br. I know it does not have the horsepower of the 6x47, 6brx, etc... but it will shoot real good. Now that I have shot all my OLD Berger VLD targets, I guess I am going to have to try the new target bullets to see how they work.
