ducks-and-bucks

I've asked a lot of questions lately and have gotten a lot of good advice from many of you on topics such as long range shooting, reloading, and custom building. I know there are more questions to come as well! I've debated, thought I was going to do it, and went as far as ordering an action today. As it comes down to the research and reading and information you all have given me I have changed my custom build (ONCE AGAIN). I am too unsure of exactly what I want in the 7mm area, and the 338 Lapua just is costing a fortune to buy bullets for to reload as much as I am going to be shooting. So here it is, the end result of all my indecisiveness a 6BR varminter rig. As we all know this caliber will reach out and touch a mouse at 600-1000 yards, and it is much cheaper to reload for when it comes to buying bullets and powder. That means I can shoot a whole lot more. This will be my first built long range set up so I am excited to get things done. As well as use it to teach myself the art of long range shooting. I guess I can say it's going to be one hail of a long range beginner rifle!

Action on order is a Defiance Machine "Deviant" if anyone knows what that is or is curious to look at the action on their website. It has a 20 MOA pic. rail machined into the action. (The action and pic rail is all one piece). I think I will be pretty happy with it!

Thank you for all of your help!

I'm a little confused with your posts. You had a 7SAUM on tap earlier today and now you're into a 6BR. Are you building two rifles at the same time here or just "Shuckin' and jivin" the gang?

The 6BR is a great learning ground...and you might decide to never the basic case. 6 BRX, 6 Dasher, 30 BR...lots of places to go with that case.

Different case but same bolt face, are the 284 Winchester and 284 Shehane. If you plan to do that on the same rifle, you might talk to your gunsmith so that they can set that future up for you.

Greg J just gave you some good advice. If that action has a recoil lug, have them " pin it", if it doesn't have a lug that's better. Just have your smith chamber you another barrel the same weight in a 6.5X284 with an 8 twist while he's doing the BR. If you get the "itch" for something bigger that will cure it. If it gets past 60 grains of powder and a 140 grain bullet it ain't much fun anyway. You will have the best of both worlds and it will take you about 10 minutes to go back and forth, I did it myself years ago. JF

That has me curious...why would it be better without a recoil lug ??
Thanx again,
Rmist

That action has an integral recoil lug. No need to pin it or it's already "pinned" depending on how you look at it.

Don't worry, I have changed my mind multiple times durring my thoughts on building my next rifle. First its this, than that, then this again, then that again. Its when the smith finally asks what I want when I panic and have to make the final decision that is the hardest. Diversification is key in a rifle for me, the more I can do with it the better, be it target shooting, hunting, or being able to compete with it someday. All three is best, but not very likely.

I ordered my Krieger in September and I still don't have it in yet. It's going to be a 6mmBR with 8 twist. I sure hope it gets here soon. Matches start in March. And the rifle has to be built and then still have to find a load and all that other fun stuff that goes along with a new rifle. So the sooner you get them ordered the better off you'll be. I heard that Krieger is quoting September delivery times right now. But I don't know if that's true or not.
