6BR--How Much Varget is too much....

Almost all barrels are lapped looser at the chamber end and tighter at muzzle.
That's contrary to what I've observed and the match barrel makers I checked out.

Broughton says each barrel is hand lapped with a uniform land and groove diameter up to 0.0001" from breech to muzzle

The loads are dependent on barrels, throats, bullet and lot of powder. Usually the longer the throat the more powder it takes. You will have to test and see where you can go. Matt
behind a 105 Gr bullet? I have two other 6BR's that are very happy with a load of 30.0 Gr of Varget. Both get about 2850 fps, even though one has a 26" bbl and the other a 30". I picked up another used rifle in 6BR with very lightly shot 30" Brux barrel last week. I worked it up to 30.0 grains of with no pressure and went to work on seating depth. I found a good spot (.030" off the lands) pretty quickly and I was happy until I got my turn with the club's Labradar.

The loads with 30 Gr of Varget were only doing 2790 fps with ES of triple what I get with my others. The throat on this barrel is very long--about .125". I'm wanting more velocity and I was hoping a little more powder would also help with the ES.

As I'm already above the Berger Book max, I'd like to hear from folks that are running more than 30 grains of Varget. You can PM if you prefer. Thanks much.

As has been stated many variables come into play. My first two 6 BR's shot well with 30 to 30.2 grains of Varget and the 105 VLD / 107 SMK's. One a Krieger the other a Kostighen , anyway my present tube is a Bartlein it never shot to well compared to my other two, UNTILL I decided to keep adding powder ......ended up at 31.3 Varget with the 450's.

Thanks for all the info and keep it coming. I'm using CCI 450's and action is a Remington. Since Lapua 6BR brass has gotten scarce and expensive, I sure don't want to open up my primer pockets.
I switched to Alpha Munitions brass and never looked back at Lapua. 6 firings before ever even close to needing trimming too. Pockets tight as ever after 12 firings also.

My last BR Barrel shot best with 30.6gns of Varget, no pressure signs, my current Barrel likes 30gns... They all differ and need testing individually.
Yes, I have found recent AR2208 = Varget to be slower than before and had to move up to 30.6 grains from 30.1 to get 2850 with Sierra 107’s & 450’s. 28” Benchrest barrel in a Pierce tube gun action {Eliseo R5} So far no pressure sign and Peterson case holding up well.

I'm happy at that velocity. Very accurate. One very competent shooter i know is loading 30.3 of H4895 with a 107SMK/CCI 450 primer, for Dasher like speed and he shoots more X's than me. You may also try IMR8208 as a substitute, but do take care with these loads.

I suppose that the saving grace with the BR and it's derivatives, is that all the available brass is from premium suppliers.

mabie but it seems the 6br is so inherantly accurate that i cant tell which powder would be most accurate. i currently use n150 with 105s but have several other of the popular ones.

I’ve fed my BRA several powders, including
IMR 4064 which actually shot bug holes at the high node ( around 3000 fps)
im from old days when all we had were imr’s and 4831— since i had an 8# of imr4064 lately and its said to b similar varget i used that in 6br to. seems like it shot good - was just saving it for garand. my latest jug of n150 is getting low and i need to shoot some of this other stuff up before getting more. mabie ill draw straws
thanks SP

i have used peterson with good success in past but never alpha— mabie ill try it. Tnx
