6BR Gear recommendations?

Hi Guys,

New to the forum and to benchrest. I have a few questions about reloading gear selections. I currently have a Dilllon 650 setup for 223 and a Lee classic cast press I would like to setup for 6BR. Can anyone recommend a good set of dies and decent shooting rest. I just aquired a new Savage F-Class and just finished decorating it. I started out with a couple of boxes of Lapua 105gr factory ammo but would like to do my own from here on out. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend Redding Competiton Bushing dies with a Forster press. I think that you will be MUCH happier with a single stage press and measured powder charges with the gun you are getting.

look up sinclair international. they have some nice front rests for $150 and up. also, they have a nice inline die combo for $199--includes arbor press, bushings of your choice, seater die, nk size die, and bases.

I personnally would not consider the 6BR a good candidate for progressive press loading. Guess it could be done, but you will never get the full benefit of it's accuracy level. Quote from "Precision Shooting Reloading Guide", page 26, Presses: "Every reloader needs a good 7/8-14 threaded press. We only recommend single stage presses for accurate rifle reloading".

I'll 2nd. what Frank says. Single stage press all the way. "I" prefer a Rockchucker. Get a good solid press!
I use a Forster Precision Bushing Bump Die and a Redding body die. RCBS Comp seater die.
Keep the headspace tight and your brass will last a lifetime. ;)

I'm sorry guys I didn't make it real clear that I am using my Lee classic cast press for loading this 6br. thanks for your help I appreciate it. I believe the Savage has a .272 throat so you do not have to turn the brass. Do you still need a bushing? Sorry for all the questions but I got a lot to learn.

make a chamber cast to make sure you have a .272 nk. or you can call savage and see what the spec on that chamber is.

If you are going to use Lapua brass, your loaded neck diameter will be .269", and for that I use a .267' bushing. If you measure the as-fired neck diameter of an empty case, and add .001" to it, that will be your chamber neck dia. My .272" chamber necks both produce fired case necks with a .271" dia. My pacific reamer is marked .272 Neck.

rockyvarminter,

I use Wilson inline dies and arbor press for my BR's and a Harrell pres F/l dies. The harrels can be matched to your chamber, all so check out there powder measures. you can start out just neck sizing with the wilson's, but you will need to F/L sooner or later. If you want to stay with threaded dies, Redding comp.

If you are going to try to get every tiny fraction of a MOA of accuracy from the rifle a turret or progressive press will not do. A "C" or "O" press will work if you are lucky and the top hole for the die is accidentally drilled (and tapped) concentric with the bottom hole for the ram. A press like the Forster Bonanza Co-ax that allows the die to center the case on all operations is preferable if you are wanting to drill teeny holes in targets at far distances. Corbin makes a free floating press also. The have a nice explanation of the differences between presses on their website. There are some very good arbor presses as well, but if you go that route you do restrict yourself in die choices.
