6BR Free Bore

Gunsmith has a reamer with a .272 neck and .104 free bore. I plan to shoot bullets in the 80-105gr range. Would like some feedback from those who have knowledge regarding the range of bullets that .104 free bore will permit. Some real life experiance would be great.

I have a reamer with .104 FB. Its about perfect for the Berger 108 BT, 105 AXax. and the 105 Berger BT.

It turns out im shooting the 105 VLD Berger and that FB is a little on the long side to be perfect for that particuler bullet. Im still shooting them very well though. And will continue to shoot them. Lots of neck on that little 6BR to work with.
Again the 95 berger VLD is just hanging on the edge of the case mouth when I shot those. Turns out they shot real well too.

A 80gr Balistic tip fits real nice like the 107 Match King.

If I knew I was going to shoot only the 105 VLD I would have gotten a .90 or maybe a little less.

260rem, my 6BR IS chambered with a .272 neck with a .104 free bore and it loves shooting all of the 105grn Bullets as well as he 87grn to 905grn Bullets. My rifle really likes the 105grn A-Max's and 105grn Lapua Scenars. I've also used the 95grn Berger VLD's and the 87grn V-Max's and my rifle shot them very well too. I went with the 105grn A-Max's because they shoot very well out of my rifle and they are the best bullet for long range varminting. I am shooting 3 shot groups, with 105grn A-Max's and 105grn Scenars, at 100 yards in the .0's and .1's. My rifle shoots the 87grn V-Max's in the high .1's and low .2's as long as I do my part shooting and reloading.

Go with the .104 free bore, you'll be fine. Who is your gunsmith?

I'm in Canada. Smith is at RPS. I'm a bit nervous that .104 freebore is too long to for seating shorter bullets,80 Berger FB) to the lands. I'm also interested in how the Ber 95VLD seat...Rtheurer, you say the 95VLD's just barely grab in the case mouth...?
I have no experiance with 6BR so need the feedback,

Yes the 95's are just hanging in there when the chamber was new. They still shot real well though. The 95 has a short bearing serface, long boat tail and a long nose. Walt Berger claims its one of his favorite bullet designs.

If you want to put you mind at ease, give Dave Kiff a call. he in my opinion is THE MAN to talk you through what your looking for. The man designs builds and sells reamers for gods sake. A wealth of information. Very freindly too.

If I was to shoot ONLY VLD's I would go with a shorter FB. but if your going to shoot ANY of the other bullets the 104 works great.

I shot my buddies gun today.,6BR), 105VLD) It printed a .207 @100 yards, five shots) off the bench with Micrometer iron sights!!!!

The bearing surface of the Berger 95 VLD is short -- about .308' long, measured with a Sinclair comparator. Other 6mm bullets whose bearing length I've measured:

BIB 95 FB: 0.465'
Hornady 87 V-Max: 0.408'
Hornady 105 A-Max: 0.474'
Nosler 95 BT: 0.514'

Even with the 0.315' typical length of a 6BR case neck, it's hard to get a freebore that works with the 105-108gr bullets, base above the neck-shoulder junction) and keeps more than about 0.130' of 95 VLD bearing surface in the neck. Still, 0.130 will hold the bullet well enough for paper punching or varminting.

260, I did some more reserch and it looks like a .080 free bore will be your best bet. I still think the .104 freebore would work fine. However, if your worried, I would go with the .080 to ease youe mind.

I have an .080' freebore. It can shoot the 75 V-Max, 80gr Berger with plenty of shank in the case. It also works fine with the 100gr-class bullets, though I lose a little case capacity compared to a longer freebore.

I have also shot the 95 VLDs successfully, seated about .010' into the lands. But the bullets were really hangin' out there, with only about 0.130' of shank in the case, based on Quickload-stated dimensions.

With a 0.100' freebore I think you'd have to jump the Berger 95s.
