6BR/Dasher vs 6.5x47

I am in the dreaming stage of a new rifle. I want excellent inherited accuracy, good barrel life and enough horse power to dispatch a deer at 400 yards. I want a short fairly heavy barrel with a Harrells brake. I was thinking a 6 Dasher with a 1 in 8, then I started reading about the 6.5x47. I need some friendly guidence.

I'm a long-time fan & user of the Dasher, and personally would prefer it over either the std BR, or the 6.5x47 (even though I have rifles chambered for both of these cartridges, and also like them very much). But, when you threw in the stipulation of taking a 400yd shot at deer - at least in my opinion - it changed the equation in favor of the 6.5x47. Logic & hunting ethic would make using a larger, heavier 6.5mm bullet the correct choice, especially since the 6.5x47's very mild recoil should allow anyone experienced enough to attempt a 400yd shot at a game animal to place his/her shot accurately.

I am not familiar with all of the energy formulas but, I think a dasher with 100gr plus bullet is enough to 500. Anything past might be a little weak. The dasher is plenty accurate to hit the mark at 400

Flatlander, I appreciate your concern about the ethics and the energy. The 6BR or Dasher with 105's have about 900 Ft lbs of energy at 400 yards, plenty for a well placed shot. I hunt with a 7x444 pistol and my hunting stands are "benchrests on stilts". Looking for a half minute rifle so I can hit 6 inches at 400 yds.

I am looking for somone to compare the 2 chamberings in reguard to accuracy, ease of loading....why do you like one more than the other.

I wouldn't worry about a Dasher for deer.

I'm getting 2950 with a 105 out of a 22" barrel, and it carries 1000 foot pounds to 550 yards, if that's your criteria for killing deer.......

We have been shooting the 105 Berger at around 3040 out of a Dasher (now a 6x47L). My Jr peta members have been popping my does for me at 515 yards for years. We just wait for a broadside shot and hit the crease. We shoot out of my shack using my 1000 yard BR bench stuff. For those who use the 1000 ft lb criteria for deer....1160 at 515 yards.....1006 ft lbs at 625. That is way more than my 44 mag at the muzzle.

All good choices. Another idea: http://www.6mmar.com/260_Imp_30_.php

If your intended use is for hunting, do you plan on having a magazine in your rifle?

If so, would a dasher with a sharp should feed as well?

I have shot a lot of dasher rounds and it is very accurate. No doubt that it will take a deer at 400 yards, but I think for the purposes of a hunting rifle I would choose a 6.5x47. Not necessarily because of any distinct advantage either cartridge has over the other in ballistics , but for other reasons...such as.

Dasher brass has to be fire formed, and loosing it means you have to make new brass which is a PITA.

6.5x47 will let you shoot a little heavier bullet.

With either caliber I would challenge you to go down to the local Walmart and find factory ammo on the shelf. This may not be a concern, but it sure bites the big one to go on a hunting trip and either run out of ammo, or realize you left yours at home, and there is nothing you can do.

In F-Class I shoot a Dasher and have done fairly well with it, but I think for hunting purposes I would choose the 6.5x47. In the end either one will work for what you want.

I've had issues with getting reliable ejection with the Dasher in a couple of M700s, and in the only M70 I've tried the Dasher in. OTOH, a friend of mine has built three Dashers on M700s, and every single one of them ejected empties just fine. But that doesn't help me - even after dinking around with the ejector spring length and the pin slot in the body of the M700 ejector(s), I still didn't get my actions to work. I wound up J-B Welding single shot feed ramps in these actions and forgetting about making them repeaters. Which brings up the issue of whether they'd have ever fed the short, sharp-shouldered Dasher or not - obviously, since they wouldn't eject reliably, there was no need to proceed with using them as repeaters, so I never found out.

I do have a Pierce TG action in a R5 Eliseo tubegun in 6BR, and with his special magazines, it feeds flawlessly, even though I did have to modify the ejector slightly in order to get reliable ejection. Never had any feeding or ejection issues with another Pierce TG in a RTS chambered for the 6.5x47. Both these rifles were built for use in XTC HP matches, and the only alibis I've had with either of them were always due to operator error. So, much as I love the Dasher, I stil think either the 6x47 or 6.5x47 would make more sense in a hunting rifle built as a repeater.

Probably kind of boring, but what about a plain old .243 Win? They'll def kill deer out at 400yds and they are reasonably accurate with very little work. John Whidden could likely hit a road sign with his at 40 yds and maybe even a bit further if he tried.

Seriously, it's likely all you'd ever need to shoot deer at the distances you're talking about with very little effort or hassle.

I thought I'd never run out of ammo on a hunting trip: well I was wrong. My 12 yr old showed just how many shots he could take without making a hit. After 5 misses in a row, we had to go back to camp and make sure the zero was correct. After that, I wanted to give him some more practice.....the 20 rounds I had reloaded quickly shrunk to zero. Thank goodness we were using a standard cartridge: 308WIN. A 30 minute trip to Walmart put us back in business. Otherwise our hunt would have been ended early. If you are seriously considering a 6Dasher with hunting in mind, then I would suggest a 243WIN is a better choice for the reasons stated above.
