6BR Coyote Load

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I have some Berger 87 gr. hunting VLD's on hand. I could load them in my 6SLR or light barreled .243, but am thinking I will use them in my 6BR with 1 in 8 twist Krieger barrel. I am only interested in shooting coyotes with the load. I'm curious what those of you that have used this caliber/bullet combo like best for powder? If you have something that has worked well, that is where I want to start. No need to reinvent the wheel. I use Varget with 105's in this rifle. I'm thinking IMR4895 might be a good place to start. Thanks for your help!

somebody out there with loads for the 87 grainers in a 6br with an 1-8 twist for Timeout? i'm waiting for my 6br same twist for sod poodles so am also interrested in what loads guys are using.

I shoot 30.5 gr. of Varget with an 87 V-max. This is a very accurate load and will expand nicely on a Coyote or sod poodle. Work up to this load and good shooting. ;D

Regards, Paul

I use 87 grain v-max, cci BR primer, Lapua blue box and H4895 in BAT action 1-10 twist 6mmBR Krieger and it is a hammer on all varmints from turtles to deer. I even have an insulated and heated "turtle" blind with logs tied out from 150 to 415 yards overlooking 2 lakes-how redneck is that!!!!!

I use 29.5 grs of IMR 8208 XBR in my 6br. Makes one little hole @ 200 yards.88 gr Bergers. Tommy MC
Tommy, you are a way better shot than I am, I have trouble making one little hole at 100 yards. I'll try some 8208 if I can find it. What kind of velocity are you getting with it? Right now I have Varget, H4895 and I also have some CFE 223 that I might try.

Timeout: I'm not sure if this will help you but I'm too damn happy not to post it. This is out of my Dasher so its a little hot for the BR but close.

34.6gr Varget
87gr. Berger VLD .010 off hard jam
BR-4
3300 fps

100 yards - 3 shot groups

200 yards - 3 shot group

Very nice, indeed! I just bedded a 6 BR for a friend yesterday. It was built by GreTan. Sure hope I can get it to shoot groups like your Dasher does! I can work out the load details, just not sure that I can steer it as well as you have done. It will be awhile until I can do the load work up and testing. Winter has set in hard here and I am dealing with my Mom's health issues. She is terminally ill and I've not had much time for projects. I'll work up the best load I can and if it doesn't print like yours at 200, I'll have to have you come and steer the rifle for me! ;D

I used 31.3 grains of varget with 87 berger vlds seated .015 ITL in my 6BR 5R .236 bore 1-8" twist Krieger in several relays of F-open. it shot good. velocity was at about 3100 fps. no need to push it any further

Thanks for the info. I am not one to get carried away with MV. Accuracy is what I try to achieve. It would help if I were a better trigger man.

Time: The BR should shoots those 87's quite well. My dasher likes them and I had a .243 AI that loved them too, they are a good bullet. I just lucked out in having a higher node to get the velocity up but they also shot very well around 3100 FPS. This is the highest I'm gonna go with the varget, I would have thought that my velocity would have been higher because I'm able to get varget pushing my 70gr's @ 3700fps but oh well.

Keep us posted with your results.

Timeout, speed kills when it comes to coyotes, been hunting them since 1976. The 60g Sierra or any of the match 60-62g HP with a max load of H335 will shoot tiny holes like you see posted shot by the Dasher at 3700-3800 fps. I also shoot the 55g Nosler at 3900 fps with a max load of AA2230. Groups are so small, you could shoot and place in a registered benchrest match using Lapua brass.

The Nosler 55g has a better BC than the 22 counterpart, so you are shooting in comparison a 220 swift at full throttle!

I compared my groups with the 55g Nosler at 3900 fps and this load just stomped everything else at 300yards, in group size, wind drift, and bullet drop. When shooting coyotes, trajectory is of a MAJOR factor as shooting a little low will just unzip them and they run off stomping their guts out and die about 1/2 mile later. When coyotes are running in, you can forget ranging them, dialing up on the target knobs.

Good luck

Good call Keith. .1/.2 isn't the world of difference on an animal that can cover 50yards in no time. I've never hunted coyotes but I know even a determined groundhog can put you off in a matter of seconds. Also you guys are normally concerned with the pelts so bullet choice is more critical.

I stopped skinning coyotes in 1984 when the market went to pot. Main thing is to kill'em hard!

What we found is that the speed will break the diaphragm even if you hit them in the stomach, and as often as not, you are shooting them on the move. It is very hard to estimate leade. 60g Sierra is a whale of a coyote bullet, tough enough to punch through shoulders, ribs, and hip joints.

I learned about speed way back when by comparing a 30-30 and a .243, shot into 1 gal. metal anti freeze cans filled with water. Thing is, right now I have an 8 twist barrel that is freebored for 105 VLD's and I'm not looking to burn it up prematurely. I have a couple low mileage 14 twist barrels that I may set up for lighter bullets at some point. I've hunted coyotes with dogs for 40 plus years and am a fairly accomplished trapper. I'm closing out the dog hunting chapter in my life and just looking to enjoy the outdoors and shooting. I'm going to miss some yotes, but so be it. Saw a guy advertising a coyote rifle on another forum recently. Said it had something like 19 shots down the tube, 8 to sight in and 11 dead coyotes. He's either a way better marksman/hunter than myself, or extremely lucky. Thanks for all the input and good hunting!

I have been using the 60gr Sierra HP for some time now in the 6BR...probably cause Keith recommended them...They work as good as anything I've found for the "lightening" kills...They are tough enough to get through some grass and Yet explosive enough to put them down on the spot...Remember, pancake holes on the exit side does not mean quick kills....Z

Thanks Z, glad to hear of your success! I hope ole Gene Harwood is looking down on us smiling, as he told me about the load in 1987. Seemed to me like the more H335 you put in the case, the cleaner it burned, faster it shot, lower the ES, and SMALLER THE GROUP! I am getting 3700 fps in my 27" barrel now, you should see what it does to a large turtle!

I have a 6BR 8 twist Broughton that I have two loads for using 8208XBR. The first is 32.5 grains of 8208 and a Rem 7 1/2 primer and a Berger 69gr Low Drag bullet. Muzzle velocity is 3310.

Second load is 30 grains of 8208 and a Rem 7 1/2 primer behind a Berger 87gr VLD Hunting bullet. Muzzle velocity is 2951.

Both these loads shoot five shot groups under .5 at 100yds. Hope this helps.

Larry
