6br bullet weight ??

I have a 6BR that I built and at the time i was into point blank BR and varmints. I still have a hoot shooting it out to 300yds. I really dont want to change it. Its a bit special to me the way it is because it is the first rifle I build.

Question is... how heavy of a bullet do you think i can get away with? the barrel is 24" long and 13 twist hart 2 groove. I have been shooting 75gr hornady FBHP and cant believe the accuracy i get with them. I would like to try something with better wind bucking abilities. I will be using this out to 300yds at the Idaho state sniper comp off bipods and its probably going to be windy. they said we could shoot multiple rifles so Im taking advantage of it!! I will use my .308 for the longer stuff..

I doubt you'll get anything heavier than 80 grains to stabilize with that slow of a twist.

A 1 in 8 is necessary for the 100 grain plus bullets and would have also stabilized the smaller, varmint-type, bullets just as well.

Yup a 8 twist would have been the choice if i would have known what i do now. Unfortunately i was told by someone that i had great respect for that a 13 twist was what i wanted. I am building another rifle to shoot the 115gr tubb bullets. for now Im stuck with this one though.

Thanks,

Load up some 87 gr.Hornady V-Max and some 80gr.Winchester PSP and see what kind of results you get. Get some 100 gr. bullets and give it a go. You've got nothing to loose. You might find that the heavier bullets "will" perform better then you think. If they don't, at least you had fun trying! ;)

2 bullets that PPC shooters have been using in F Class here in Australia to shoot back to 600 yards with 13-14 twist's are the 70ge Speer TNT they are just awsome for a flat based bullet the other is the 70gr Sierra HPBT MatchKing's both have shot very well back to 600 yards with the PPC so the BR should be able to get a little more velocity than a 22" PPC. Try H4895 or Varget they will both give good velocity will reasonable pressure and the Rem 7 1/2 primer is good for both powders as they burn a bit hotter and the powders are on the slow side for use with small rifle primers and they both have reasonable amounts of deterent coatings to ignite the powder through.
