6BR bullet question

I shoot quite well in comp. using the 105gr Berger at 300 and 600 yardages. It is not accurate enough to compete in 100 & 200 yardages. I have an 8 twist barrel. Question:Has anyone discovered a lighter bullet/load for the shorter ranges in the 6br that can come close to the 6ppc's accuracy? I am tempted to try the 80gr. varmint match ,,,but am sceptical of my 8 twist. Thank you, in advance, for your replys.

260Ravage, I shoot the Berger 80gr varmint match bullets in my factory Savage 8 twist with great accuracy using Varget-IMR 4064-Reloader 15, Varget gives best results by a narrow margin . My rifle likes them jambed .015. If I do my part they regularly shot in the low .2s with the occassional high .1s thrown in.

I just purchased a couple boxes of Berger 80 gr bullets to shoot from my 8 twist 6br as well. So far I have only tried them with varget powder, and I have a couple of loads that shot impressive groups at 100 yards.
I am still tinkering with seating depth to fine tune things, and next time out plan to head to 200 yard line.
I would like to use these for 200 yard matches, and I think they may turn out to be my go to load for coyotes with the 8 twist barrel.

I think its a matter of load development to get them to shoot at 100 yards. I have 2 Dasher barrels that shoot 105s in the 1s on a consistent basis at 100 yards.

80 gr Berger and N135. Great load in any 6BR.

My 6BR (0.236 land diam., 1:8" twist, PacNor 3-groove) has ventured down into the ones with this combo, about 0.012" into the lands. I was not running a particularly hot load. It won't shoot ones all the time, but the 80gr bergers will shoot tighter groups at 100 than the 105s/108s in my gun.

I don't know if it is true, but I was always told that flat base bullets stabilize quicker than boat tails. Supposedly as it leaves the bore the gas pressure would tend to be exerted more evenly on a flat surface as opposed to the boat tail, which would have to be perfectly concentric up to the bullet shank so as not to be tipped at all upon exiting the bore. Of course farther down range the boat tail will leave the flat base behind as it struggles to combat the atmospheric drag. All that said, my rifle has shot some 100 yard groups in the .1 to .2 range with 107 smk, and 105 Lapua scenars.

The bench rest guys that I know use only FB bullets at the 100 or 200 yard matches.

Thanks for the replys. In my load 200 yd developement with the 105s I could not get a great group with any load combo. But at 300yards they are super. I just picked up a couple boxes of the berger 80gr. varmint match. hopefully this week I get the time to test em out. I am quite confident from the info I got here, they will perform well at shorter distances.

I've also have problems trying to get my 8 twists to shoot at 1 & 200 yds, consistantly. Had been working with Varget, but recently went to the 6BR info page (all excellent info), and gave the 80 gr. Bergers another try (previousely with Varget & it was on and off), with 30 grs. of N135, .015" of jam & the 205M's. Best, smallest groups yet, but more importantly to me, consistant. I have the same thoughts about boatails clearing the muzzle, not a clean break as you get with a flat base, because of the tapered heel, but at 300 yds. & beyond the ballistic advantage starts to take over putting the BT at an advantage. I'm leaning more & more to limiting BT's for distances of 400 & beyond.

I'm gonna try the Varget, simply cause I own it. I have never in any rifle had success with Varget. I always come back to my old faithful Re15. If it wasn't so dirty,,,I'd love it more, tho.

260Ravage: One of the complaints I've heard about Varget is that it can change with different lot numbers. I've always been a big fan of varget, until I see problems, then look around for an alternative, and my experience with N133 is that it is very consistant from one lot to another, so hoping N135 has none of those problems. I especially like the VihtaVuori powders since they are very clean burning.

I have never broke down and purchased VihtaVuori powder. It has been too pricey. If my re15 does not perform I'll spring for the N135. thanks.

In the last 5 years I have loaded Varget from 3 different lot numbers, and found no significant difference in velocity change from one to the next. Years ago, inconsistency between lot numbers was the big complaint about it, so I tended to buy it in 8lb. jugs to eliminate the problem. I have not tried RE-15, although it is big with the high power shooters in my local club.

I shoot 80 grn. Fowler flat base bullets in my 1 in 8" twist Kreiger using Varget powder and CCI 450 mag primers and it is outstanding. In fact, this is going to be my 'go to' round. I'm tired of tuning the VLSs to shoot well.
