6BR Build What I NEED?!

I got the action on order. Defiance Machine "Deviant" deep fluted bolt!

I know you all have this down to a science for this caliber so here it goes!

Now all you 6BR gurues school me. 105 gr or 107 gr bullet and brand?

Powder?

Barrel length and twist rate?

Plans for this rifle is a varmint rig for 600-1000 yards.

Your questions are like asking "I want to buy a truck"........

Are you wanting a Freightliner to pull a 40' trailer or a Ford Ranger for gas mileage and throw a little junk in the back?

Read the 6BR cartridge guide....all the particulars you're wanting are there concerning powders and bullets.

How you plan on using the so called "600-1K varmint rig", determines how you build it.....lightweight walking varminter or a full blown, off the bench gun?

At this point all I can say is to get an 8 twist....your barrel will decide what bullet to shoot.

The question also comes up: What length action do you have on order? Medium or long? Most of us are using short actions for our 6BR builds. Shorter bolt throw, maybe a more rigid receiver(?).

It's up to you to decide what bullet, powder, primer & bullet seating depth will work best in "your" barrel. They are all different. 2 of my 8 twist 6BR's need the 105 Bergers and 1 does better with the 107 SMK.

2 seem to prefer Varget and 1 "likes" H4895.

As alf said, read the 6BR info posted on this site, a lot of information there, and if I were you, the 8 twist would be my first choice.

Just me, but I need the versatility to shoot in the event formats that are available to me. I can't drop $2,500 - $3,000 in a rifle for varmints.

I'd have the action done as a RB/LP/RE. I like to shoot fast and it helps resale as well.

I'd get a barrell in max Heavy Varmint profile. About 23" finish length. 8 twist. Chambered in 6 Dasher. I'd have it specifically throated for one of the low drag boat tail designs. In my situation, I'd also have an 18 twist 30 BR HV and maybe a 14 twist 6 PPC as well.

A stock like the TMBR, Kelbly Klub, JTR, etc. with a 3" forend and a butt stock profile that would allow me to shoot in IBS.

It has a sizeable integral recoil lug in front, but I'd still have it glued and screwed.

I'd target 13.5 lbs with the scope that I wanted to use in the most weight restrictive event format. Like I'd try to make 13.5 lbs with a Leupold LCS, but use one of my big NFs when allowed.

That's all just me, dude. I only posted to give you things to think about.

If being used from a bench go with a 1000yd setup. Kelbly 1M, McMillan Tooley, Shehane Tracker type stock. Heavy Varmint barrel contour at 28-30". Get reamer with .104" freebore so 105 Amax and 105 Berger Vld can be used. Start with Varget. Also a Seb Neo or Farley front rest would be handy.

Consistent feeding would be my only concern with 6br in a repeater? I have built a few 20br's and we ended up making our own mag boxes. Something to consider?

If I was wanting a dedicated repeater varmint rifle, I'd just go buy a Tikka T-3 in 243. Wait! That's exactly what I did!

I have a bud that has a 597 rebarrelled in 6BR that feeds reliably. I got my T-3 on clearance. There is no way that I can justify the coin for an all-custom varmint rifle. But, I guess others feel the same about my competition rifles.

That'll be a great contour for a target gun, but a pig of a barrel for hunting....BTDT...

Exactly what I was thinking, but maybe he can drive to where he shoots from.
