6br barrel contour

I have a 6creed that’s near the end of its life and thinking about going with a straight 6br from James at northland to shoot 70 on up to 90gr bullets from 600yds on in. I have 2 questions though for my first br barrel

1. I do not shoot rapid fire or many rounds between strings, no competition either so will a varmint contour .800- .850 be just fine so I can drop it right into my stock ?

2. I shoot the heavies (108s) in a 6xc, so would a 8 twist be fine for 70-90gr pills or do I need a slower twist ? Thanks in advance.

I have a Criterion, Medium Heavy 24", "Sporter" contour, 1-7.5 Tw, .104 FB, 6 XC Barrel and in, a H-S Precision Stock with a 6-24X Scope that weigh's 10 Pounds ( Un-Braked ) and 10 1/2 Pounds with a 4 Port Brake.
It consistently shoot's, One Hole group's from, the LOW 2's to 3's with most "Good" 80 gr to 108 gr. Bullets.
The muzzle dia is, .705 and the rifle is light enough to take on, Coyote / Antelope Hunts.
"Cold Bore" shots ARE, Always,. "Bang On" with, this Stiff Barrel.
It's glass Bedded from, the Tang out to, 1 1/2 inches of the Barrel's,.. "Shank" Portion.
For Me there was NO need to Go any heavier, on Barrel size !
For 70 to 90 grain Bullets, you Might Try, a 9 Twist barrel and .060 FB if, offered.
James can Answer, all your Questions.

An 8” twist will work fine. If you’re also shooting some light varmint bullets you might consider a 5R that will be a little gentler on the more fragile bullets if he has option. Something like a Rem varmint/sendero contour will shoot great and not weigh a ton. Enjoy!

Yep I just talked to him. He said his were all .090 or .095 freebore that was in stock and only 8 twist. If I wanted any different twist or free bore it would be 6-8 weeks.

Think a 75vmax, 87vmax, 95 smk or 95 berger would be fine as far as reaching the lands and still being in the neck enough ? And I wonder how long the throat would last before I had to go up to a 105 or 107 class

You’ll have more bearing surface in the neck with an 87 Berger than with a 95. I know that’s strange, but it’s true.

That dependant on how much free bore the reamer has. I would email Northland and ask what free bore his reamers have. I’d be looking for around .040-.060” or so for those lighter bullets. That should still work with 95’s in the long BR neck

All his are .090 or .095 he couldn’t remember he told me

I have a factory Savage model 12 F-Class- 30" 8 twist Barrel. It can shoot 80 Gr and 105 Gr bullets. Finding the correct load and seating depth, I'm able to shoot 1/3 moa groups with both bullet weights. The 80 gr still have plenty of bullet in the case's neck.

It just might Be, worth the Wait to, GET Exactly what you, want ( Your, decision,.. TIME goes By, quickly ! )
What will your Rifle's "primary Use", Be ??
A 9 Twist with, a Shorter .050 - .060, F B, is near, Perfect for most, 70 - 87 grainers up to, "Some", 95 grain, Bullets.
IF walking around, after Varmints, I'd Watch. the Rifle's,. Weight ,. IMO ! ( Sub 10.5 Pounds, IS, Nice ! )
Good Luck with, "Your, Choice" and Keep us, posted.

It’s just a rebarrel of a savage model 10. Mostly hitting steel out to 600 is it. With the occasional ground hog or critter and shooting groups. NO COMPETITION. Not wanting an all out bench rifle. It’s looking like a standard 8 twist .090 freeebore is going to be what it is as I’d like to be able to shoot some 90s or 95s. It’s going to be my first venture into a br so I’m expecting it to shoot a lot better than my other rifles lol

The 8 twist 93fb will work just fine. I’ve shot 75 and 87 Vmax and 105 Amax out of mine with no issues. For my Savage I use a criterion 8 twist(93fb) and a UBR 8 twist(104fb).
How do like the criterion? I have thought about them a few times but seem to always go back to shilen sm and urban
