6BR at 500 yards

Since I restocked my 6BR more than a year ago, I have not had a chance to shoot it much since I have been playing the 100-200 game. Well, last week I decided to take it out and do some playing at 500 yards. I have to give some serious props to my buddy "PREACHER" who did the chambering and barrel work for me. He can certianly make a gun shoot good. Loads are 105 Berger VLD being pushed with 29.6 grains of Varget. Pac Nor 1:8 twist barrel.

Wes, you should have brought it to Huntsville a couple of weeks ago. :>)

You might think about coming out to San Angelo in October and shooting it in the NBRSA Texas 1000 yard championship match. We will have a great time there.

On-Target computer shows that to be a 1.24" 5-shot group, assuming the squares are 1" on a side.

That's great accuracy. Congrats.

Robert,
You know I knew that, about three laptops ago I downloaded it, then never fooled with it, and have long since forgot about it, I just downloaded it again and will try to download some groups and play with it, thanks.

Thanks Forum Boss,

I take it you need scan capability to make this work?

No you don't. You can take a picture with your cell phone and email it to yourself. Just make sure the picture is flat and you are square to the target. Works just fine but the scanned picture would be clearer in most cases.

And I (we) are not the form boss, we just jumped in.

OnTarget Software
The software is OnTarget and it is still free. You can run the calcs off any photo -- you don't need a scan. Of course it is much better to have a photo taken straight on without any wide angle lens distortion. It is also vital that something in the picture is a known dimension. In the photo above I took the 1" dimension off the square. There is a tool in the software that lets you do that.

Color Mods
I've changed the default colors to red circles and green boxes, but you can set the colors to any combination you want. There is limited ability to may the lines thicker, but that's kind of limited by the resolution of the image.

It's a very valuable program that can settle a lot of debates. I personally think it is more accurate than some of the manual methods because you can zoom the photo to 300% or 400% to more precisely position the red circles around the bullet holes. Can't do that when manually measuring a real target.

Zombie, which PacNor barrel ? Or, how many grooves or rifles ?

I have put a PacNor in 6mmBR on my wish list, but according to their website, the 5-groove is not available in 1/8, only 1/7 and 1/9.

dang, i was happy with my 2.54 group at 600 yesterday with my savage 12 6br. guess ill keep working. great shootin by the way.

That is some excellent shooting,it looks like a 200 yd target for many and including myself when I am struggling. Preacher you are a master machinist, great work and he is a heck of a nice guy. That is why this forum is king and worth every penny donated.I will be donating more in the near future. Zombie, keep the articles coming.I always enjoy your threads!!!!!!!!!

Had I known that the Moderator would place this on the Daily Bulletin, I would have written it better. I have been blessed to have several guns that Preacher has worked on. He is most certianly an excellent machinist. Once I get time to sit down with my .260 that he has done some work on, I will most certianly do a write up on it. I just do not have the time now a days.

I shot my first rimfire match today, and MAN WAS THAT FUN!!!!! So nice to be able to shoot with out all that recoil, and noise. The wind is sooooo much more into play, but that can teach you a lot.
