6br at 1k

I shot 1k for the first time with my 6br . shooting 107 gr. smk with 30 gr. of varget getting about 2830 fps. I have a shilen 30 " barrel . Do i need more speed to shoot that far or do I keep it there ? It seems to shoot the best at 30 grs. but I never tried to get it up to 3000 fps . will it burn the barrel life a lot faster ?

Velocity should come after accuracy. How did it shoot at 1k? If it shoots then just learn to shoot it in the wind. Velocity will just help reduce effects of wind

You might try the Berger Hybrids. The higher BC could help.

You can do 1K with 2,830 but another 100fps would help in the wind and shouldn't kill the barrel with Varget of RL15.

Getting to 2930 fps would be pushing it, but it is do able. I would say that RL15 should get the job done. Might consider using moly.

So I gave 1000 yd F class a go yesterday for the first time with my 6BR varmint rifle. I had a blast despite my cluelessness. I was finally beginning to figure it out by the third string, but by then the wind and mirage were even giving the big boys a hard time. Load was 30 Gr of Varget behind 105 Bergers and that was about all it would take in the heat. From my come up from 100 to a 1000, I figure 2750 fps was all I was getting. A little more speed sure would help. Could RL15 give me another 100 fps?

I would not worry about extra speed until you get the "game" figured out a little better. When you start leaking shots out of the 10 ring by a small margin you might start thinking about hot rodding the 6BR or going to a bigger cartridge. In the meantime, enjoy the 6BR, it's accuracy, and low recoil.

Congratulations on your first match!

RL15 did give me 100 fps more than Varget in my 6BR shooting 105 Bergers out of a 28" Krieger. BUT, The load that worked on a 55 degree day, was too hot for a 78 degree day. After getting hard bolt lift for the 1st 5 shots, I put the loaded rounds in my cooler for my next relay, and it helped. (the bolt lift wasn't as hard) I no longer shoot RL15. Varget works for me in all temp variances.

Maybe I better stay right where I am. My first string was in the morning at 70F. My third string was in the afternoon at 90F. Load with varget stayed pretty consistent.

Gman, how much R15 were you using if you don't mind my asking. You can PM if you like. I only have about a half pound of Varget left and I have a pound of R15 that I may have to use like it or not. thanks

I ran into pressure issue with RL15 here in South GA last summer. Worked up a load on a cool morning and shot same load next day around 90F and it almost blew a primer!! Half the jug is still sitting on shelf collecting dust since temps here can be very cool to 100F easy
