6BR and 107SMK shoots great. Need advice with 95gr VLD.

I am tickled pink about how my Savage/Shilen 6BR shoots now. I can consistently get 0.2 - 0.3 MOA from this gun at 200 yards using 107gr SMKs, 30.0gr of Varget, and BR4s and the SMKs seated to jump about 0.020'. I get about 2780 fps with this combo.

My barrel is an 8 twist no-turn neck cut to 24'.

However, I am completely perplexed with the Berger 95gr VLDs. I would really like these bullets to shoot, but have had no success so far.

Using 31.0gr Varget, I've tried:

1. Seating them 20 thou long and let the bolt jam seat them.

2. Seating them 5 thou long.

3. Kissing, 0.005' and 0.010' off.

None of these has yielded better than 0.7 MOA at 200 yards.

I've testing 30.0 up to 31.2gr with the 95gr VLDs seated 0.005' long and still no better than 0.7 MOA.

Am I not pushing these fast enough?

I'd hate to come to this conclusion, but maybe this gun/barrel just won't like 95gr VLDs.

Twist and Spin are what makes bullet selection critical. The faster the spin, the slower the projectile, so choose wisely and accurately. With 100 grain fare, I find 9 1/8' twist ideal. cliffy

My savage 6br/shilen barrel doesn't like Varget regardless of which bullets I choose. It does however work well with H4895 and VV n135.

I shoot 95gr berger,s and I cant make them shoot very well. I saw on the forum that there is a berger page that is titled VLD-making them shoot.doc but I can't get the sight to open up. How can I open it up? I hope someone can help.

thanks dwight
