6BR- Ackley Improved 40 degree

Jim, I am no doubt sold on the 6BR-AI! I started this process last October and have a year into it. My AI has shot extremely well here at the house at my 500 yard range. It shot better than anything I have shot here including my best shooting Dasher barrels. It would consistantly shoot .8 inch groups and shot one .494! I shot it in 4 matches at Piedmont 600 yard matches. It placed at the top each time, shot 2 groups under one inch. The last match I shot was August 13 at Piedmont in HG, look it up. Placed 1st with a 1.881 agg in less then favorable conditions. The rifle looks like a LG but has 10 pounds of shot mixed in the expoxy at the McMillian factory (by the way, McMillian stopped this process, or should I say the EPA helped with that decision!). Load is 31.7 of R-15, Berger Hybrids and CCI-450's. Shooting a .135 freebore. The throat is 0.2438, per YOUR idea you told me years ago. I listen to expert shooters! Thanks Jim! I spec all all my reamer that way now and wonder if 0.244 might be as good or better for fat bullets and carbon build up? And yes you will still see me shooting Dashers and trying the new Norma Dasher. I am the type person where trying different things in shooting keeps my interest up, otherwise I start getting bored. Let us know how your project works out! Samuel Hall

Sam, i haven't even scratched the surface with it, but it wants to shoot. With a old Brux ff. barrel.I shot 32.2 gr. RL-15 and a .1 either way is still in a .1 groups so it doesn't seem to finicky. Easy to make, :-) jumping .004, cci 450 and the free bore is about .130 maybe a little too much for these bullets but OK and the cases don't grow at all ...... lol..... jim

Sam, I don't like carbon to build at all due to the fact it will cause heat to build there and ruin the barrel. .244 is a good number though, but i will stay on .2438 for now ....... jim

What speeds getting with 31.7 Sam ??? I load 31 grs, 2928fps and great accuracy. Tim said it wasn't a race, I know there other nodes, but I quit there.

That must be a compressed load. I played with 4320, and gave up on it. I'm sticking with RL 15.

At 31.7 of R-15 I'm at 2920 in my barrel. I ran it up to 3050 to see where pressure signs were. Groups definitely started opening up the higher I got. I stopped at 3050, still did not any any bad pressure signs, I saw no reason to go higher, groups getting worse. And I did not run into any compressed loads with R-15. If you are compressing R-15 with 105 class bullets, even in a standard BR case, you have way too much powder in there!

Sam, I'm shooting a short barrel, cut off the back and front and ended up at 24.5" and it is going 2890 with 32.1 gr. of RL-15 and it shoots little groups . Brass goes right back in after it is fired. No hard bolt lift, nothing ...... Groups repeat so, i will try a new barrel 26" and see what it does. I'm shooting it out a short range gun to boot and staying well under the 13.5 HV weight, i also have no compressed loads...... Like you said it is a keeper..... jim

One other thing, we have frost warnings already, so i am set up for 60 degrees, but i shot it in the mid 80's with 32.1 at 2890 es was 5. At 55 degrees 32.2 was 2890 es was 4..... not too bad for old worn out Brux........ jim

Jim an Sam I think you both are on the same page.

I got my version of the BR Imp out today and went to testing again.
Specs are Varget, 450m primers and my bullet shot from a 30" barrel.

Chrono readings are

Charge Vel. ES SD

30.8. 2860 1 .3
31.0 2878 9 5.8
31.2 2896 12 5.2
31.4 2914 11 4.8
31.6 2933 10 5.5

Temps were in the low 50's not where I would want to test at but I have do what I have to do.

Two frost, two days in a row ..... i will be plowing snow soon..... I remember in Memphis in the mid 60's they had a freezing rain one night. The police had something 200 plus wrecks and most them were the police cars. They never saw winter i guess. Up here it is just an other day ....... jim

Why rechamber, there are lots of homeless barrels out there that need love too............
