6BR accuracy issues

fm1947 said:
I have 2 6brs one is a 24 the other 29 inch both would shoot sub 1/4 moa at 100 and 200 yards, I tried some moly at a match one Sunday , I bought them by mistake and I was out of bullets , I used them in my 24 inch shilen, the barrel never has shot the same since, now it is about .5 moa it was worse shooting 1 moa I have scrub and scrubed that barrel to get that moly out I will never shoot moly in anything again.

Moly wouldn't do that....

Bradley,
nothing else it could be while cleaning I put bore light in and could see a chunk that broke loose from in the groves, prior to shooting moly it would clean up in minutes it is a 4 grove shilen and I am still getting black junk out of it.

I had a .25-06 for years it would shoot .5 " groups no problem. I shot some moly coated 85 gr. ballistic tips through it and it never shot the same again. Also got a load of black junk they continued to come from barrel. This barrel had a lot of rounds down it before the moly and was getting rough. but afterwards the accuracy was never the same.

There is a way to get all the Moly out of the barrel, will do a search and see what comes up!

Gunner75,

Your 500 yard groups look excellent to me. The only suggestion I have now is that you may want to experiment with a different rear bag. You may be getting a little vertical from that. Your bag is very high-quality edgewood, but some guys have less vertical with a shorter, leather bag. Don't buy anything -- just borrow another bag and experiment.

Congrats on your match score -- that's darn impressive!

Acetone removes all moly from what I was told.

There is no way I am going to believe a few moly bullets will ruin a barrel... A decent barrel anyway... The moly coating in a barrel is microscopic in thickness...

You are talking about "chunks".

If you want your barrel like new clean take and have it cleaned ultrasonically. That removes every single bit of carbon and fouling...

The barrel above had several 107 moly bullets down it before settling on bare. FWIW. I shot a few groups the other evening and it is coming in very nice.

my barrel had 100 shot through it, acetone hmm worth a try.

Sounds like carbon or maybe that "anti carbon" additive that Alliant uses... Moly isn't going to "fill" anything...

I use Vatget and I meant flakes coming out of it like fish food flakes, same load i used for a year are so only difference was the moly bullets, after the match I cleaned as usuall went to shoot jacket bullet and that is when my accuracy went south. Hey its my story and im sticken with it. but i will try some acetone, thanks for info and your opinion.

Some gunsmiths have the machines bid enought to put an AR in. If one is in your area, I would suggest taking the barrel off and having it ultrasonic cleaned!

I know of one smith in my area who has one big enough to do the job! FYI
