6BR 70 gr NBT 3700 fps???

Well, I ended up building a 6BR on a 1/14 twist Hart by Dowling. It has been extremely accurate with 2230 powder (thus far the only powder I have tried) and the 55 grain NBT. I was getting craters on my primers at 3750 fps so I sent my bolt to Gre-Tan and had the firing pin hole bushed. From there I was able to achieve 3920 fps out of my 26" barrel. One more TENTH grain of 2230 powder made the velocity jump to 3980 so I settled on 3920 fps. Accuracy never changed. Pretty much one hole.

I have been a bit surprised at the performance of the 55 NBT at 3900+ in the field. My first critter taken was a coyote at 185 yards or so. He was DRT but I expected to see a huge exit wound but did not see any such. I have shot a number of S Texas hogs as well. As long as I brain them, they are DRT. Anything else and they run off. A cull buck, head shot at 170 yards as well as a decent 8 pointer neck/spine shot at 225 yards were also cleanly taken. This little cartridge is a real killer as long as you can get steady enough to deliver the little pill right where you should.

My combination is about the same........14 twist Hart, 24" long, braked, 0 freebore chamber, 2230 powder. Best accuracy with 55/58's is from 3708 to 3970 depending on bullet and primer........ 7-1/2 and BR4 primers. Working load is a 55BK at 3919 with a 7-1/2 primer, or 3970 with a BR4. With 14" twist this cartridge has an accuracy window over a wide velocity range.

My gun sees bullets 55- 65gr, never tried anything heavier........with this weight AA2230 is the stuff for this cartridge. A friend uses it in his 6BR and gets pretty much the same results.

+1

My velocity is identical to Ackman's, Lilja 27" 12" twist, zero freebore.

Gene Harwood sat a world record in the 80's with the 6 BR shooting His 60g match bullets at 3700 with H335, 24" Heavy Varmint class. I shoot the 65s also at 3650-3700 but the 55g noslers at 3900 simply blow every other bullet out of the water when it comes to group size at 300. I made my own 75g BT Low drags and the 55g Nosler out shot them also!

My first 6 BR was a rechambered MHV benchrest take off. I got 3550 out of the 60g Sierra with H335, tiny, tiny groups. One thing about using H335, you get your best accuracy on the top end pressure load, burns so clean it is unbelievable. I could fire 100 rounds, remove the bolt, look down the barrel and see no powder residue!!!

Ackleyman, I need to thank you as well. I read your posts carefully when considering this project. Thanks for paving the way!
