6BR, 6BRA, or 6 Dasher for 600 yd?

I am primarily a high power shooter, and I shoot a lot of 6br for over the course. I do not push this cartridge...29gr Varget with 105hybrids at 2850fps~ for 600yds , its very accurate and dependable.
However, I love the 6Dasher at 2975fps~ for strictly prone use....it seems to have an advantage at mid range over the BR (I have never shot the Dasher for prone at 1000yds). I do play around with PRS and plan to run a Dasher for that, that family of cartridges are very accurate.

Thank you everyone for the advice and help. I think I'll go with the straight 6br for the easy tuning and only 600 yd. If it was 1000yd I would definitely be going with the Dasher. Now I just have to decide between Criterion or Shilen and match or select match if I go Shilen.

I looked at the reamer print for the Criterion and Shilen. They are pretty similar. Both are a .272 neck. Freebore for Criterion is .107 and Shilen is .112. Criterion is 6 groove and Shilen is 4 groove ratchet rifling. I pretty sure I'll be going with the Criterion. Both are 1 in 8" twist. 1 in 8" will be enough to stabilize the 105 hybrid or 107 smk, right? Berger's stability calculator says marginally stable for the 105 hybrid.

8 tw has been fine for 105-108 gn bullets for years and years.

The 'marginal stability' thing is a little overblown. It doesn't mean the bullet is going to fall out of the sky, or go sideways thru the target. It *might* shave a tiny bit off the BC... but in a lot of cases, the amount is within the SD of the BC variation from bullet to bullet anyway i.e. you'd have to be *really* looking for it to even know it was there. Almost certainly not an issue.

Well I think I'm going to go ahead and order the barrel tomorrow, and start looking for the components I need to get it going. I already have varget and BR4's. Need to get the dies, bullets, brass, and headspace go gauge. Thank you everyone for the advice and opinions. A lot of experience to learn from on here.

I had a criterion with that exact same twist and reamer. The 105 hybrid worked ok but was a bit more finicky. Started using the 108 berger with varget and it worked really well.

At 1000yds I would recommend the BRA or Dasher which are both 6BR's with an extra gear...as someone on here once described them.

For 600yds the 6BR is all you would need and easy to tune. 105 Bergers, 29.50gr H4895 (work up), CCI 450's (if you have any or can find them).

More of the top shooters have used specific calibers and that is why you might see those calibers regularly in the winners lists. Those same top shooters using a 6BR could beat a lesser shooter using a Dasher.

I shoot a Criteon barrled 6 Dasher on a Savage model 12 right bolt left port using the Savage Accu Stock. Go to load is Berger 105 VLD over 31.5 gr RL 15 in Alpha Brass. Shooting on F Class 600 yard targets, it is a real confience builder.

I have to vote straight 6BR. Them savages can be quite accurate and competitive. The fact that the 6BR is way easier to work with for a new shooter makes it way better choice in my mind. Plus the fact that the Dasher is so variable makes it more work to get equal results, and depending on the brass, maybe less of a advantage.

Brass can be baught at the expence of less capacity in the case of Peterson, over putting the work into making it out of Lapua, which will give more velocity than the Peterson with less pressure. Savage is going to have less forgiveness with primers when when pushed to pressures they like to run the dasher at!

I went with 95 grain HPBT Bibb's instead of 105's the same BC's for what I call, the Dasher beater! It likes 31.0 grains of Varget, gives me easy bolt lift, primers look great, and accuracy at 3024 fps aggs under .333" with two different loads and 2 different seating depths. and is not finicky at all. Here are 5 5 shot groups, shot the same day, two left groups are 31.0 grn, with .004" difference in seating depth, the 2 right groups 31.3 and 004" seating depth difference. after zeroing the scope the lower right group was another 31.0 grn load same as the lower left load w/2.763" aol aiming at the square boarders corner, all 5 shot groups, all the same afternoon, and no cleaning between groups. This picture sucks as it is taken off the front of my cell phone that has fell off the holder when I get too aggressive on the Harley,,, but it still works even with the shattered screen.


The first group with a clean barrel was the top left group the lone shot was the first shot, I should have fouled the barrel,,,,, but it and the lower left, and the one at the bottom on the right corner of the boarder were all 31.0 grns. The load I ended up going with using a seating depth of 2.265" right in the middle of the three groups.

If I want to run the 108 Hartenstein's I grab my 6x47L, I can run 3150's without stomping the guts out of it and enjoy light bolt lift and longer brass life, with great accuracy running 4350 powder.

The standard 6BR Savage with a 1-8 Krieger and the 108's pushed with H4350 was no slouch either, but I did blank a primer or two shooting it where it shot it's best,,, maybe with a custom bolt and tighter firing pin and pin hole clearances, things would have held 100%. But this is a $250.00 gun used for the base of this rifle.

Not quite Dasher speeds, but close, and plenty accurate.
