6BR 17 inch barrel?

OK here is the deal.. I have been thinking of building a heavy short varmint rig using a savage action with a no taper barrel with a laminated stock and an 17inch barrel 6BR. Max range would be 400 yards I would say. How much barrel do I need to burn up all the powder? Also what twist would I need for 55 to 68 grain pills? Would this even work out to 400 yards? But I would think that most shots would be under 300.

A 14 twist is going to do you a nice job with those bullet weights, I use a 20 inch barrel on a XP and it seems to shoot just fine, and seems to love the 66 grain Fowler flat base, but the groundhogs sure don't..
This will be on a pistol frame correct ?

Thanks Preacher.. I thought about making a pistol with the savage action, but I thought it would be kind of neat to build a really short heavy 6 or 8 lbs rifle instead, 16 1/4 to 17 inch barrel that could possibly reach out to 400 yards or so. That way it would be good for walking in the woods and shooting off hand. And if I seen something in the fields I could take a shot at it also. I understand that the gun would have its limitations shooting long range, but I wonder what that would be?

Whew Danny that thing is going to be loud and have a heck of a muzzle flash. I forget on a Rifle does the barrel have to be over 16 or 18 inches to make the boys at the BATF happy ?

Well I never considered how loud it would be
I wonder if its going to louder then a 44 mag? that is really something to think about.. ATF BATF states 16inch barrel and a total length of 26 inches barrel and stock. So I would make it 16 1/4 or 17inch. Maybe I should make it a 223? I have never heard a 6mmbr go off before, so I am only going buy what people tell me. I will do some more poking around to see if anyone has a contender or something in the 6br in a 14ich barrel to see how loud it is, then I could make a better decision.

Hi
I have a H&S prcsion pistol with a 18 inch barrel and a 1 in 13 twist. It shoots the 65 grain vmax like a dream with N135 powder. The longest shot with the pistol is 351 yards on a PD.I do not find it any louder that any other rifle as I wear ear plugs:D

Dogfox the difference is that with your pistol your arms are extended putting the muzzle farther from your ears and face.

I have shot a 16 inch 30/30 mounted on a TC Encore Rifle with ear plugs.:crazy: Lets just say i won't do it again.

I have a 16in barreled 6br and it is no louder than anything else that I shoot. gets 55gr nbt to right at 3700 and is more accurate than anything else I shoot. the 223 will be cheaper but once you get the lapua brass it will last for ages. you also really don't have to do any prep work for the cases to be extremely accurate, especially for vermin. and yes, 400yds is very doable with this setup. mine is 1-14 so I can not use anything very heavy but it does go up to 75gr vmax without problems.. I don't try to go above this. Also, I have only shot that to 100yds and no farther. I don't know what it would do at longer ranges or if it would stabilize. RG
