6BR,1:8) with 80 Bergers?

I have a 28' 6BR,1:8 twist) that I want to try some 80 Bergers for a 100 yd match tomorrow. I got a little range time this morning and I tried Varget and N-135 with 80 Bergers. Here are my results.

80 Bergers seated 0.010' into the lands. All 5 shot groups

31.5 gr Varget -3107 fps, H-0.231, V-0.421, group 0.409
31.8 gr Varget - 3131 fps, H-0.304, V-0.541, group 0.541
32.1 gr Varget - 3179 fps, H 0.701, V-0.468, group 0.839
31.2 gr N-135 - 3248 fps, H-0.628, V-0.941, group 0.965
31.5 gr N-135 - 3288 fps, H-0.325, V-0.658, group 0.702

The last 3 groups were shot with a 10-20 mph variable headwind switching from 3:00 to 9:00. The range is in a pit and the wind whips in different directions from the sides. I was shooting with the flags at 11:00 to 1:00 but the wind speed varied more than I thought at the end. I think a lot of the vertical was due to wind and my sucky reading skills. N135 gave single digit std dev on both loads. The 31.5 gr was hot and flatten the primers a little.

Any one got experience with the 80 Bergers? Were are the nodes, fps)? I am getting better groups with my 95 Bergers but I just want to try something different.

Thanks for any tips, tiny

With your twist, I think you would have better luck with the 105 or 108's shooting Varget or R15.

tiny68: I've also tried the 80 gr. Bergers in my 8 twist, 30 grs. of N135. Very good results. However, the 95 gr. Berger VLD, with 31 grs. of Varget, seated with a .010' jam, and the CCIBR4 primers, have been the consistant producer of small groups. Had a rare opportunity yesterday to test them at 400 yds., and 5 shot groups are averaging under 1/2 moa/ under 2'. This is one of the recommended load combos on this sites 6BR info page, and it works, for me.:)

A fast twist 1 in 8 will shoot light weight bullets far better than most folks think they will, one of mine shoots the 80 grain Fowlers as nice as the 105's with RL-15...

i shoot a savage lrpv 1-8 tw. i took a load from this site..80 gr berger fb varmint..31.8 varget..rem 71/2 primer..i started .015 off the lands and this load shot so well at 100m that i never went any further..no signs of pressure..shot at 300 yds..11/2 ' 5 shot group, but it was windy w gusts..no flags..i want to try again before i make any judgments..one thing i do want to do is try the same load w/ diff primers..i have some cci 450 & fed 205m..see what ..if any diff they make

I have shot the 80 gr. Berger bullets using 30gr of N-135. I am using a 8.5 twist Kreiger and this load shoots .2's at 100 yrds in good conditions. At 300 yrds the load doesn't shoot as well as the 107 gr sierra bullets, however at 100 yrds it's the best load I've found.

Faster twist barrels do not mean you 'MUST' shoot heavier bullets, it only means that they 'ALLOW' heavier bullets.
The bullet weight is determined by the distance and wind conditions you intend to shoot. Normally lighter bullets are more accurate, with no wind). As the distance gets longer, and the wind stronger), heavier bullets will help. In shorter distances the 80 grain, and even 68 grain) should be more accurate than the heavier bullets in any twist barrel.
Also, a 1:8 twist is not the 'universal solution'. A slower twist will be more accurate with lighter bullets/ shorter distances. Why do people keep recomending the fast twist barrels for shorter distances?
,such as under 300 or even 600 yards in lighter wind)
I don't get it :,

I fully understand that a 1:12 twist would be a more ideal match for the 80 Bergers. I would love to have a dedicated 100/200 score gun and a 100/200 group gun and a 300-600 group gun and a 1:8 6BR for F/TR. I can't afford that. I have a Savage Target Action that has been True and Timed with a SSS LVT stock, a Weaver T36, and a bunch of barrels that I can switch in between. I usually shoot my 30BR for Score and group at 100/200 yds but I want to try out my new barrel 1:8 6BR barrel. I have a 1:10 Krieger 6BR that would be more suited for the 80s, but again I just want to see what will work in this barrel.

I would love to have a 3 or 4 custom actions/stocks with premier scopes set up for a single purpose. I like shooting a lot of different formats, point blank score and group, 300-600 BR, and F/Class format). I will live with what I got until I have more funds and don't need them in life. If I don't place in the 3 top at a match I still had fun. And my groups and skill set continue to improve.

I believe you took what I said out of context.....I Said:
'In shorter distances the 80 grain, and even 68 grain) should be more accurate than the heavier bullets in any twist barrel.'
I in no way was suggesting you buy more barrels or guns.
The extra verbage was because some people think you get better accuracy with heavier bullets at shorter distances, not true)
Again....even in a 1:8 twist barrel, the lighter bullets will be more accurate at shorter distances. In other words, you choose the bullet for the distance and wind condiditon, not
soley based on the barrel twist. My 10 twist 6BR likes 68 grain better than 80g at 100 yards, even though it can shoot up to 95 grain bullets.,
My 9 twist CZ 223 likes the lighter
40 grain bulllets at shorter distances, not the 55 grain that everyone seems to recomend. My addtional comments were to people who think that the fast twist barrels are the solution to every problem. If you seldom are going to shoot 1000 yards, then an in-between twist makes more sense. Given you already have a gun, then my original statement answers you question directly. ....'lighter bullets are more accurate at shorter distances, regardless of barrel twist.' ,eg. 100 yards)
Yes, 80 grain Bergers should work...but 68 may work better at 100 yards if you can reach the lands.,most likely the 100 grain bullets will not be as accurate at 100yards.If you would like to know what powder and load works well for the 68 bergers, I can P.M. you
