60gr Nosler Partitions on DEER? Anyone Tried Them?

Been reading about 60gr Nosler Partitions used on deer.. A friend of mine kills at least a couple a year with his Winchester Model 70 Coyote using factory 223Rem ammo with 60gr Noslers. He has been doing this for about the last 10 yrs.. Largest deer was 160+ pounds at over 150yds... Says he hasn't lost any either... Reading the product reviews on MidwayUSA, NatchezSS, and others all give positive ratings... The HandGun Hunting crowd has been killing deer with Their XP100s in 221fb, 222rem, 223rem for decades... Contenders in those calibers too. l am thinking of trying the 60gr Nosler Partition in one of my 22cal CF Varmint rifles... Anyone here used the 60gr Nosler on Deer??

Buddy of mine uses them in his H&R .223. He, his father and both of his kids have used it to kill dozens of deer. He swears by it for a very low recoil set up. Rib cage shots enter and exit Everytime. Shots I believe have all been under 100 yards. All his deer have been recovered quickly also.

It has been my experience they work great I use them in a 22 250 on deer

My son has killed 7 bucks and does in the last 10 years with a 22-250 loaded with .224 cal. 60g Nosler Partitions. I started him with that combo when he was 9 years old so recoil would not bother him. He shot a 200 pound 10pt buck that year at 40 yards. The buck reared up and fell straight back dead. I was so amazed by the internal damage when I dressed it that I have not changed that combo for him. The bullet went through the back part of the front shoulder, completely though the chest, wrecked the lungs and top of the heart, though the opposite shoulder and lodged in the skin on the opposite side. The high velosity and the ability of that bullet to stay together is devastating. He has not had a deer to take a step (of 7 deer) from 40 to 325 years. Note, due to lower velosity, I will not recommend shooting over 200-250 yards with a .223 or smaller cal. Samuel Hall

I have shot several Pronghorn with both the 55gr and 62gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, that perform in the same class as the 60gr Partition. Both are used extensively in Texas for pig's and lots of other animals under 300 pounds. When employed within reasonable ranges and with vital area hit's you will be very satisfied with the results.

I typically run Varget in my 223 cases and it's an excellent choice.

60 gr partitions work well, but if your rifle will stabilize them, 62 gr Barnes are better. I use either Benchmark or Varget.

I used them many years ago in a great little kimber with good success. I only recovered 2 bullets; one was classic mushroom and the other was just the base sitting under the skin on the far side. I switched to the Barnes 62 recently but mainly because I mostly shoot pigs now.

just once 10 yrs ago. Was going in for rotator cuff surgery 2 weeks after season opened & the 300WM just hurt when the go switch was pressed. So, used my Tikka .223 w/varget. 59 yds , boiler room shot. went about 10 ft. Still have 49 rds in the box in case one of the DIL's or grandkids ever decide to go out w/grandpa.

60 grain Partition, 26 grains of Varget in a Winchester case, CCI 41 primer. Shot from a Savage Hog Hunter. 160 pound sow hog at 80 yards, broke both shoulders, stopped in the off-side hide. Complete front section missing, classic Partition mushroom. Hog went about 18 inches, straight down.

Stabilization is what counts. My opinion is you need at least a 9 twist.

I would always take the advice of those who actually used this bullet on deer, not paper numbers. I have never used this bullet or the 223 Rem on deer so take what I'm about to say with a 'grain of salt'.

At a velocity of 3,100 f/s with this bullet you will be developing about 704 ft-lbs of energy at 200 yards. While most "experts" claim that 1,000 ft/lbs of energy is the standard for deer, I've taken deer with a 357 Magnum with energy below 704 ft-lbs but at distances well under 100 yards so I think it's plausible to take a deer clearly with this load if you keep the distance reasonable say under 200 yards and go for a behind the shoulder shot. The Nosler Partition bullet is an excellent bullet providing a balance of penetration and expansion which should enhance you chances.

However, what if a deer of a lifetime gives you a shot? I would want a more effective cartridge. Yet I've taken a bunch of deer with a 243 which a lot of "experts" claim is marginal for deer. The two largest bucks I've ever taken, 175 lbs field dressed at 155 yards, 150 lbs field dressed at 185 yards were taken with a 308 and while the 243 probably would have dropped them I was glad I had the 308 on those hunts. I chose the 308 based on my knowledge of the area having seen a number of large bucks.

I never could get a decent load worked up with that bullet. All I ever managed was a little under two inches at 100 yards. I insist on better accuracy...especially since shot placement is essential with such a small projectile.

Some bullets defy all logic, and the 60g Partiton is one of those bullets.

First, it is hard to get this bullet to shoot small groups. So a "1" inch group, I consider accurate for deer and hogs.

Second, in a 22/250 the 60g Partition will do the damage of a fast 150g cup and core out of a 30/06. More than once I had to throw away the front end of a deer, so I will stay behind the shoulders.

Third, an option would be the 55, 62, and 75g Speer Bonded Gold Dot

I have killed two does at a range of 100 yards with a Rem 788 with 55g Winchesters with a load of 26.5g of Win 748, they dropped in their tracks.

Brother killed two does on a pond dam at a distance of 270 yards with a 55g tripple shock. Both does ran a ways, and that was the end of his deer hunting with an AR15 with tsx, but lung shots usually mean running deer. Since then, he has killed hogs with 64g winchesters in the AR at ranges of minus 100 yards.
