600/1000 yd Ideal Scopes?

There are many great scopes available to the long range shooters today. Lately, the Nightforce 15x-55x Competition model seems to be the most common choice of the long range group. Is there any scopes to give that great scope some competition? Maybe the 10X-50X MOAK from Kahles or perhaps the 15x-60x Vortex? Both of these are premium scopes that are fairly expensive. Both companies have agreed to loan me a sample for testing and I will post my results of this website. This is not an attempt to bash NF at all, but to explore more choices for the discriminating shooter. I am presently shooting a 10x-50x Sightron LR at 600 yards and it is a quality scope, although not in the price range of the NF, Kahles or Vortex. I may include it in the test. Good shooting......JamesDSCF2009.JPG 20160331122452KAHLES_K1050_MOAK_III.png opplanet-vortex-golden-eagle-15-60-x52-scr-1-moa-tcs-1501-main.jpg ST%2025003.jpg

I would like to see the Swarovski X5 tested. As far as scopes go, I bet the Nightforce BR has set more records and won more aggregates then most the rest combined. You don't need 50x or more to shoot good at 600 or 1000. What you do need is 1/8 MOA clicks so you can score. And rock solid point of aim. Matt

I am looking for a scope with which I can see 6mm bullet holes at 600 yds. on a day with low mirage. That may be impossible with my 73 year old eyes, but I continue to look for that holy grail. I realize that with heavy mirage like we often have in Louisiana, there is no known scope that will define bullet holes at that distance. If any of you are in this part of the world on the 3rd Saturday of each month, come shoot with us. We are located in the extreme northeastern part of Louisiana in West Carroll Parish. ( a few miles sw of Oak Grove. Good shooting...James

James,

You may have to test a 12X52 40MM Valdada Terminator. It's Big, its Heavy and it's Expensive! But the glass is impressive. The other problem is you'll need a picattany rail. Currently that the only type rings that come with the scope.

Bart, I have not even seen one of those scopes, but if it is as good as my old 36X, I am sure that it will compete with any scope out there. No I can't see bullet holes with the 36X Valdada, but that is probably because of the lack of magnification. As a matter of fact, the only scope with which I have seen 6mm holes at 600 was the 15-55x Competition NF. I haven't had a chance yet to use the Vortex, the Kahles or the Valdada that you mentioned. Does the new Valdada have a 34mm or 40 mm tube? Thanks, James

Its a 40 MM tube. I've seen bullet holes with it dailed down to 32 power at 600. I just checked. We got some in but they are sold out. So testing a Terminator will have to wait. They went fast!

I believe this is what everybody is looking for. I only ever saw 3 times when somebody saw bullets at 1000. All 3 times it was a Night force BR 12x42. Once was Eric Springman and twice it was Dave Tooley at Nationals. He sat beside me and told me where my bullet holes were after we were done. They were also 30 cal holes.

I don't know about 600 yard, but I bet 6mm holes are going to be hard to see at that distance. Everything has to be right including the angle of the sun. Matt

By the last round yesterday if you'd added a little color to the targets you might have though they'd brought in hula dancers...

Those tan stickers are pretty big. Guessing at least 3/4 inch. Also very high contrast to target especially when in the Blue. A bullet hole is way smaller. Did you ever see bullet holes in Targets? The only time I saw it done there was when the sun was right. Only One time.

I saw a guy bring a big telescope, one about 10 inch diameter and 195 power. I don't think he could see them either. Matt

I received the Kahles yesterday and shot it some yesterday at 100 meters and today at 200 yards. It is a large, heavy scope that is expensive, but I feel privileged to have a chance to shoot this optical instrument. I am not ready to write an article about it yet, but I will say that my initial tests have been impressive. As with all new scopes, I shoot the "square" and this scope performed flawlessly. I fired two shots at my aiming point to establish a zero; and I followed with a series of 5 MOA adjustments (left, up, right, and down) the last shot made my 3-shot group into a .107" c to c spread at 100 meters. More to follow. James

If I had to give this new Valdada a name it would be "M.O.A.B.S" ......Mother of all big scopes.New Valdada.png

James,

Your timing couldn't be more perfect. Friday at deep creek we had cloud cover and great optical conditions. We the nf comp to the new march high master 10-60. The new march is very very close, but the nightforce still has just a hair better resolution. I found 4 6mm holes at 1000 with the competition that could be made out with the march, but I had to strain just a bit more.

Then today, Alex put 7 different scopes on the P.O.A. tester. Be looking for a detailed report from Alex by tomorrow night.

At this point I would use the competition to spot holes, and anything else to aim with;)

Tom

I sold my nf comp to get new 10-60 high master. I shot the nf for 2 1/2 years and did not sell it because of the glass (glass was wonderful). Just shot second 600yd match w/ March hm, didn't have option to compare side by side but I know nf comp glass was a little better. That said, the hm glass is plenty good enough and my confidence level is way up. Now if I can just get my damned rifle tuned

At 600 in great conditions w my nf comp 6mm in wht are easy to see, in blue- not so much. Havn' t shot high master in conditions good enough to see 6mm in wht yet.

Also, at 600 in all conditions I've used it in, my Kowa 88 Prominar can easily see 6mm in wht or blue, FWIW.
