600/1000 yd heavy bench rest rifle part 3

ok, I was leaning to 300 wm for heavier bullets,, but will take the hint and move to a 300 wsm.

so WHAT ACTION?
I SHOOT RIGHT, so a dual port right eject yes ?
will a short action handle a long 300 wsm ?
or do I go with a long action.
recommendations ?

LA for sure............Can't go wrong with the above choice. Purchase the reamer & get 2 barrels done right out of the gate. Your next question should be about reamer prints with suggested FB and why............I am interested to see those responses as well.....Best of luck with your build...

Regards
Rick

I have been out reading stuff and have questions.

is a bat m only single port to match bolt handle ?

it looks like a borden brl does not have a long enough ejection port for wsm ???
looks like the brm/brmxd will work.

Kelbly's golden bear ???

Pick a reputable smith and explain to him what your after, he will be able to give you definite answers from experience and build you what your after. Just my .02. Good luck with your build.

From the Borden site comparison chart, dual ports:

BRL - 3.5” loading & 30.06 length eject

BRM - 2.75” loading & .284 length eject.

I would call the shop, they are very helpful. Jim surprised me answering the phone after hours when I was planning to leave a message.

there appears to be a typo on port sizes on one page.
it says 4 sizes but only lists three, if you look at the actions with 4 sizes listed, the last is wsm length.

Borden makes a great action.
BAT makes a great action.
Neither will hold you back.
Give them a call.

Talk to some reputable gunsmiths (who know more than you) and be willing to trust their component preferences or pick a different smith whose preferences align with yours.
Any ***coherent*** (well thought out, synergistic) build from a top smith will shoot... its about "Barrels & bullets."

Helps to understand the Borden lineup (BAT seems no less complex at first):
Any action can be R/R, L/L, R/L, or L/R which means one default/dual-use load and eject port size.
The ejection port on a multiport (dual port) action is called the mini port.
B (short tang for LV)
BB (BAT tenon & port length)
BR (Regular 7-3/8" OAL: PPC/BR or 6.5x47 mini port)
BRM (Medium 8-1/8" OAL: PPC/BR, 6.5x47, 6.5x284, WSM/RSAUM mini port)
BRL (Long 8-5/8" OAL: 30-06 mini port)

Diameter options: 1.350, 1.470 (XD), and 1.400 (MF) (1.470 radius on the bottom with flats on the side)

Talk to Jim (and your gunsmith) to be sure which configurations come with a flat on the bottom, if that matters for your intended bedding.
If you go BRM with a Magnum Bolt, talk to Jim as well, because the WSM/RSAUM multiport size and location are slightly nuanced.

BRM or BRL will work. The trade-off is port size (removing a loaded round) and bolt length (cycling speed).

Good luck with your build,

Your right on doing a 300 WSM and won't be sorry. Much easier to tune and better brass. Also the throat doesn't move near as much from shooting it. The long action is better then a short because it will just function better with the longer bullets and freebore needed. Matt

I have two BAT -L 10" and there the nuts. Right Bolt Left Port

They are fun to shoot but, 5# actions requiring 1.450” (min.) barrels get real heavy, really quick. I have one too, LB/RP.

From another post by the OP:
thinking 18-22 lbs or so complete
no super big cartridges, like my shoulder where it is.

I thought he wanted a heavygun in 300wsm?

yes what a silly idea. READ THE OPENING POSTS. I clearly said I did not want a HEAVY rifle, just a rifle heavier than light gun. I said 18-22, and was talked into looking at up to 25...BUT NO MORE. so not bat10's

18-22 lbs that is still a light gun! Build a heavy gun. Mine weighs 85 lbs wouldn't have it any other way. When I can't carry it to the bench anymore I'm done shooting. It's such a pleasure to shoot.

I strongly agree with your last sentence, Joe, maybe the last two.
Everyone has to make the choices that fit their own needs, but the BIG ONES Sure are Fun!

Haven't shot a true heavy in yrs., do too physical limitations (shoulders and hands), but next yr. I'm going too be using a 50ish pounder, Have been fireforming with it and I had forgotten how much Fun they are too shoot. WSM here I come ;).

I think 45-50lbs is the lightest wsm i can see working. Any lighter than that it needs to be a dasher or bra. A 25lb wsm trying to shoot groups will be on the market in short order

I can imagine a true heavy gun is fun, my wsm is 16.8 and a bit of a handful for me trying to run 10 shots.
