6 X 47 Lapua or 6XC?

Sorry if this has been covered and I suspect it has but my gun is at the smith's shop and I need help
in picking between these two. Would really like to hear the pros and cons, ie. barrel life, accuracy, die availability ect. I did notice that Norma makes 6XC brass much cheaper than Lapua 6.5 X 47. I have
just recently done a search on the 6XC and it sounds like a really great cartridge and the accuracy issues
(real or not) that I have read about with 6 x 47 concerns me. Many thanks as I will probably
be making a decision within a week.

John.

I have a 6xc and a 6br as "bench"rifles and have shot against quite a few 6x47's. I'd recommend the 6xc in a heartbeat. Go with a no turn neck, buy the Norma brass and don't look back. No need to fire form or mess around making brass from scratch and all that BS especially if you are just starting out new to this round.

Most of us 6xc shooters have found the round very easy to load for and as long as you do your part it'll hang in there with the best of em. ;D

Nothing at all against the 6X47 either, I've shot against some that are tough to beat. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. ;)WD

I can't talk about the 6XC, as I opted for the 6x47L when I buit mine. I do not understand the accuracy problems that some folks have had, as mine is literally one of teh most accuarte rifle I have ever owned or shot. The load developed incredibly easy, and its a true hammer for either 108 Berger BTs or 115 DTACs. Granted I run mine 2,900 - 2,950 fps for both the 108s and the DTACs, from a 27" barrel, so I'm not pushing it hard.

6XC is easier for sure, and a little more capacity.
An advantage to one or the other really depends on bullets used, and shooting temps.

I believe barrel life will prove to be the same between these.

The 6XC has been around longer, has much more history, more info & knowledge base, bigger and better resume, and as noted above - the brass is cheaper. Just went back and watched David Tubb's DVDs "The Modern Match Rifle" and "The Tubb 2000" last night. All 7+ hours worth. Pretty hard to argue with that kind of sucess :-)

I've built rifles chambered for both cartridges - not much to choose between the two, as the XC has a bit less than 2grs. case capacity advantage over the Lapua. I've shot several 6x47s quite a bit in 600-1000yd any/any prone & BR Varmint Silhouette matches, and generally have quite a bit more experience with it than the 6XC. Mine have been extremely fine-shooting rifles, and while the single 6XC I built was also a good shooter, since I've already got a good supply of Lapua cases, I have no desire to abandon the x47. So far as "hearing about accuracy problems" with the 6x47 goes, you may have noticed that anyone can post anything they please on the 'net, but that doesn't make it fact.

Hi , I am in the same posiyion as John d , and would also like to have some more info on these two cartridges.

The rifle i want to build wil be used mostly for target shooting on live sized animal targets , in some matches range is known and others it is not , distance will be from from 50meters to 375 meters.

The bullet I want to use is sierra 95gr match king , the reason is that it has n good BC. and can be driven to quite n high speed ,thus compensaying some extent for wind drift and bullet drop at unknown range when you dont guess distance very accurately.

I would like to use a 28" barrel length so that I can get optimun speed and stil not make the rifle to cumbersome

Please advise
Thank you

Willem

My 6xc bench rifle is a 1-9 Twist Kreiger and I use a 28" barrel and I shoot 95gr naked bullets from it. The 95gr Seirras shoot quite well though it. If you can get 4305, N550, or R-17 Powder over there, I'm guessing you'll do OK. WD

I have no XC experience, but do have a Schneider barrelled 8 twist 6x47L that will shoot 107 Sierra MKs in the 1s at a 100. It didnt do that in the beginning, but w/some good advice from Doc Stone to jump the bullets, it came together quickly. Same was true for my 6BR and my 6.5-284. Jumping the MKs in those barrels really made all three come alive. Larry in western Ky

Had an XC and I got frustrated with building my own brass from 22-250. Wasted some barrel life. My two 6x47Ls shoot lights out but the cost of brass is getting up there. I have a 6.5 SLR and will be getting a 6 SLR reamer sometime this year. I really think Robert Whitley got this one right.

Brass was scarce and pricey relative to the time I have available when I started the 6XC. Here is the kicker, it was a savage rblp 6BR that the barrel was rechambered after a trim at the breach and recrowned. It shot lights out. Pushing the 115s hard my 22-250 brass averaged 4-5 firings before the primer pockets loosened up. No such drama with the lapua brass. I used winnie 22-250 but the norma or tubb stamped norma maybe get you better mileage.

I am starting to wonder if I am ever going to shoot out the 6x47Ls.

IMHO, they're close to being same/same. While the 6-6.5x47L has great brass the 6XC has brass that's just as good.

6.5X47L brass approx $95 per 100
6XC brass $69 per 100 (Norma)

I've been shooting the XC for a few years now, great cartridge. Easy to tune and fun to shoot. It easily drives 105/108's at 3,050fps and is easy on the brass at the same time. The 6-6.5X47L may give a slightly higher fps since it employs a small primer and may hold up better to higher pressures but, I've never had a need for or seen where for velocity's over 3,000 would make or brake you on the line. Either would make a great little daily shooter or match round depending on the discipline you choose. BR = 6-6.5X47L, Tactical matches = 6XC. You’ll loose brass at tactical matches and it stings less with an XC ;)

At the end of the day it really just boils down to which one blows your skirt up. For me it's the brass cost difference since both are high quality.

Heard of one fella getting 1 1/4" groups at 500 yards with the 6.5X47 Lapua. But that's "hearsay".

Also had the pleasure of shooting with Don Nielson and his Bat Action, Bartlein barreled 6.5X47L at our 1000 yard Championship shoot last August. He won a 17 lb. gun relay and I think even took one of the days with 1st in somethng (not sure which category he won, I think it was top score) against a crowd of around 50 shooters. We shoot 10 shot groups. He shot Berger 130gr VLD's right out of the box to win.

Showed pretty good promise up against most of the 1000 yd world record holders shooting their 6mm Dashers that set those world records.
